Why 'hands free' can be healthier.

Why 'hands free' can be healthier.

This week is British Sandwich Week and I for one, love a good sarnie.

But is a sandwich considered 'healthy'?

Hell yeah! With a few simple tweaks, a sandwich can be a simple and tasty powerhouse of nutrients that supports gut health and, prevents huge sugar spikes.

Now, I'm a fan of the 'hands free' sandwich. You probably know it as an open sandwich!

Why?

Well, for starters, you are by default, not overdoing the amount of starchy carbohydrates by sticking to 1 slice of bread. Secondly, it means you can really pile on the toppings and variety means lots of different nutrients. And thirdly, eating with a knife and fork slows down your eating, which means you are more likely to be paying attention to what you are eating and notice when you are feeling full, sooner.

I love to poke around in the cupboard & fridge to see what I can add to my bread and it makes a great family challenge, to see who can get the most inventive/number of items on their slice - even picky eaters have been known to embrace this!

Here's what a couple of my sandwiches looked like this week.

Homemade seeded wholemeal with beetroot & mint hummus, avocado, salad leaf, cherry tomato, cucumber, pepper & garlic sauerkraut, sunflower & pumpkin seeds.

No bread sandwich with portobello mushroom as base topped with beetroot & orange chutney, artichokes (jar), watercress, tomato, grilled halloumi.

I get the above will either provoke a 'yummy' or 'yuck' response - sandwiches can be a very personal thing, which is why, when I work with my clients, they will never be told what they 'must' eat but instead, we work together to create a plan that is filled with food and activities that they love and enjoy, and therefore, find easy to implement and get the results they want.

So go on, give you and yours a challenge today and see who can come up with the most creative combo. I'd love to know what you come up with, so do hit reply and share your sandwich.

Great idea! I go a bit nuts with my salads sometimes and I feel like the one slice opens it up for more creativity than usual 😂
