Why I Started Tell Your Tale (and Why It Matters)

When Dad died, I realised a few things. Firstly, it happened way quicker than we ever expected. Secondly, I wasn’t prepared — not only for the loss of him as my much-loved Dad and the gaping hole left in my life, but for the loss of his stories. His voice. His knowledge. His humour and his sparkle.

Dad was always a great storyteller, conversationalist, and lots of fun. If I ever wanted to understand something complex — politics, history, or the world in general, or just felt like a good chat — I could go to Dad. He was well-read and had a wisdom I had always been able to lean on. I trusted his take on things. And if he didn’t know something, he’d encourage me to go away and research the topic or look it up myself. And always with kindness. He had a way of weaving things together that just made sense.

And then — suddenly — he was gone.

I hadn’t recorded him. Not his voice, not his stories, not his humour. I hadn’t captured his essence. I was gutted. I wanted to hear him again. I wanted something I could play back. What do you do with that ache when your parent dies and you realise they’re just... gone?

So what happened next?

A few weeks after Dad died, I started hunting for his voice in any recordings I could think of. I grabbed his cellphone. I tried to retrieve the voicemail he’d left me the week he died. I even contacted Spark to see if they could help me. But I came up empty. That hurt more than I expected. The silence was deafening.

In the years that followed Dad's death, I became more curious and informed about podcasting. Then, private podcasting. And it all started to come together.

My love for storytelling. My passion for interviewing. My belief that no one else should have to feel the way I felt — that heartbreak of not having your loved one’s stories, their voice, their presence — recorded and remembered.

That’s what sparked Tell Your Tale.

I wanted to create a way for people to capture their loved ones' stories — their voices, their humour, and their essence — using audio technology and private podcasts. Something warm and personal. Not confronting. Just relaxed conversations with a mic clipped to their shirt.

I chose audio-only because audio lets people relax. There’s no lens, no performance. It’s just real. And you can go deep — have those beautiful, long conversations that unfold naturally. Private podcasting lets us divide those stories into episodes, so they’re easy to share and listen to.

So that was the beginning — the birth — of Tell Your Tale, the business.

What is Tell Your Tale?

At Tell Your Tale, we help you preserve your loved ones’ life stories in a private audio podcast — a personal, meaningful keepsake your whole family can treasure.

We believe everyone’s story is worth telling. A well-told life story has the power to connect generations, spark memories, and deepen understanding. Our mission is to capture these stories with care, turning them into a lasting legacy that can be listened to and shared for years to come.

I chose to record this story on my iPhone, in the moment, because I wanted to show you just how powerful and real audio can be. Sitting on a park bench, tears streaming, thinking about Dad, looking out over the harbour — that’s where my emotions were raw and the words were honest.

This is what I love about audio: it captures us as we are. No script, no polish — just truth.

It’s a personal project and business with a powerful purpose, and I’ll be sharing more stories here — from me, about me, and this new chapter.

Thanks for reading. I look forward to sharing another tale with you soon.
