Why the Organizations Section Matters

Why the Organizations Section Matters

Your LinkedIn profile’s Organizations section is a terrific place to showcase how you give back to the community, both professionally and personally.

One of the reasons I encourage you to populate this section is because by doing so, people reviewing your profile who are a part of one (or more) of these organizations will feel connected to you.

It’s especially important to reference your involvement in your local, state, and national professional organizations. Include your leadership roles and other ways you have made a positive impact on these organizations.

What to Include in a Listing in the Organizations Section

  • Name of the organization. Include the name of the specific organization, as well as the national (or international) entity with which it’s affiliated.
  • Your roles within the organization. List and briefly describe the kinds of roles you have held and continue to hold within the organization. If you undertook a major initiative, be sure to reference it and the results you achieved.
  • If you have been extensively involved in the organization, don’t list every single position you have held. Instead, summarize the types of roles you have had and the impact you have made.
  • Add testimonials to selected organizations. You can include testimonials within the description of each organization you list.

One of my Organizations: Toastmasters International

I’ve been a member of Toastmasters International since January 1997. Over this nearly 30-year period, I’ve come to know hundreds of other Toastmasters from around the world.

Toastmasters who review my profile will often resonate with the contributions I’ve made.

Additionally, organizations like Toastmasters International, along with service clubs such Rotary International, are highly respected in both the business and nonprofit worlds. As a result, people are likely to have a higher regard for me and my services due to my involvement with Toastmasters.

How do you view the Organizations section v. the Volunteering section? I put most of mine in Volunteering.
