Why September matters

Why September matters

September is my favourite month of the year.

It's the start of Spring here in Australia.

It's my birthday month -- which means a whole month of cake and coffee get-togethers with friends, something I started doing last year.

It's 19 years since our family uprooted from Singapore to create a new life in Australia.

It's 20 years since I decided to trade in a career in law to find more meaningful uses for my time and talents.

What a journey it's been! I am thankful for how far I've come, in awe of the courage of my younger self, and excited for what is ahead.

I have by no means figured it out, even after 20 years. Sometimes I still wonder if it was a mistake to deviate from "the path" scripted by societal and cultural expectations. If I had remained a lawyer like my peers and stayed in Singapore, this would be the year I qualified to access my Central Provident Fund monies (the equivalent of superannuation).

Instead, here's what I've been doing:

  • Raised a family in a less stressful academic environment.
  • Watched my girls grow into independent-minded young adults.
  • Started a podcast that is ranked in the top 10% globally, despite being about a very niche topic.
  • Found a way to combine my love of helping others with an understanding of how trauma can affect the mental health and professional choices of introverts.
  • Wrote and published a book that became an Amazon #1 bestseller.
  • Founded a community to promote social connection for introverts during the pandemic. It now has 3,000+ members from Australia, India, Singapore, Japan, Europe, etc. Who knew there are so many introverts in search of friendship and connection?
  • Got active attending business networking events in person and online, expanding my network of contacts locally and around the world.
  • Made peace with my childhood trauma and conditioning, evolving from a quiet achiever into a Quiet Warrior who uses my voice to amplify those quieter than myself.

As my favourite boyband sings,

Yes the past was honestly the best

But my best is what comes next

You and I best moment is yet to come

Always cheering for you,

Serena

P.S. Whenever you're ready, here's how I can help:

Subscribe and listen to The Quiet Warrior Podcast for the gifts and myths of introversion, and meet inspiring Quiet Warriors who share how they use their introvert superpowers to shine, prosper, and create change.

Book a 1:1 consultation if you're an introverted professional who wants to speak, lead, and take decisive action -- without acting extroverted.

What a beautiful reflection, Serena thank you for sharing this. It’s amazing to see how many meaningful chapters can unfold when we step off the “expected” path. Your journey is such a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to rewrite the script.

You’ve done so many amazing and meaningful things Serena. I hope you are really taking the time to reflect and celebrate all of it! In the US it’s about to be Fall. Definitely a favorite time of year here with cooler weather and the holidays. 🍂

Happy birth-month! What a beautiful reflection and generous sharing of your path, and the vulnerability that comes along. I always gain such encouragement and connection from your postings as I am in the beginning of that uncharted path, like you did 20 years go. September is my birth month too—and it is fall where I live. My September song is: Try to remember the kind of September When life was slow and oh, so mellow Try to remember the kind of September When grass was green and grain was yellow Try to remember the kind of September When you were a tender and callow fellow Try to remember and if you remember Then follow, follow
