Why SpirituWell is Launching Continuing Education for Healthcare Chaplains

Every healthcare journey deserves the best spiritual care. That’s SpirituWell’s North Star and reason for existence. We’ve focused on delivering professional, compassionate healthcare chaplaincy to patients, families, and healthcare teams—whether in hospitals, dialysis centers, infusion suites, other serious illness treatment settings, or at home.

But there’s another side to that mission: ensuring chaplains themselves have the tools, mentorship, and continuing education to strengthen their practice. Today, I’m excited to share why we’re launching SpirituWell Continuing Education for Healthcare Chaplains—and why I believe we’re positioned to do so.

Why Continuing Education Matters

Like other healthcare professions, chaplaincy is a lifelong practice of growth. New care models, new settings, and new patient needs constantly call for professional adaptation.

Yet chaplains often face two challenges:

  1. Limited access to advanced, practice-focused continuing education beyond the fundamentals of CPE.

  2. A credibility gap: too often, chaplaincy is misunderstood or undervalued by healthcare professional peers, non-chaplain healthcare leaders, and the wider healthcare system.

As a non-chaplain myself, I’ve seen this credibility problem firsthand. Compared to physicians, nurses, and social workers, chaplains often have to work harder to demonstrate their clinical expertise and value. And yet—I’ve also seen, time and again, the life-changing impact that well-trained, professional healthcare chaplains bring to patients and families.

That’s why I’m a constant ally for the profession. I believe one way SpirituWell can serve is by creating a platform where our most experienced chaplain leaders can share their wisdom, mentor their colleagues, and help shape the future of the field.

Why SpirituWell? Aren’t We a Care Provider?

A fair question. SpirituWell is, first and foremost, a provider of spiritual care. We don’t see ourselves replacing academic or research organizations. We aren’t developing evidence-based practices (though we deploy them) or focused on CPE related “Chaplaincy 101.”

Instead, we’re filling a different gap: professional development rooted in practice across a diverse and changing continuum of care.

Our team of chaplains brings an average of 15+ years of experience in diverse contexts: inpatient hospital care, community-based palliative care, Veterans Affairs, pediatrics, oncology, kidney care, and hospice.

Several of our team members are ACPE educators, department leaders, and professional faculty.

And because SpirituWell delivers care across both traditional and emerging settings—from hospitals to outpatient serious illness programs, via both in-person and virtual modalities—we’re learning, every day, what it takes to make chaplaincy relevant in contexts where it hasn’t historically been embedded.

That lived experience is what we want to share: applicable, advanced education from seasoned practitioners who know what it means to be at the bedside—or on the screen—when patients and families need chaplains most.

What You Can Expect

Our Continuing Education webinars will be:

  • Affordably priced

  • Eligible for Continuing Education (CEs)

  • Designed for seasoned chaplains who want to deepen their practice, not just review the basics

  • Delivered by seasoned chaplains who are demonstrated leaders in the field

In other words: this is about upskilling, not fundamentals. Our goal is to empower healthcare chaplains to strengthen their impact, demonstrate their value, and deliver the best spiritual care in every healthcare journey.

I would love a fully remote chaplain position. When Covid hit I was about to begin a spirituality and meaning making position at the college I’d been working at for two years. Then everything closed down and I quickly adapted two years of spiritual care program planning into a fully remote position. I loved it!!! Three years ago I unexpectedly lost my job (not the one at the college) and I’ve been searching for work since. Offering remote spiritual care is the dream. 😍🥹
