Why Talent Alone Won’t Get You Noticed-Positioning Will.

By Lydia Quayson Adjei – Team Lead, Get Your Answers Consult

"You can be the most skilled person in the room, but if no one understands what you bring to the table, you’ll keep getting overlooked."

This truth hit home for many during Week 2 of the Thrive & Lead Mentorship Program, and it couldn’t be more relevant in today’s competitive job market.

After a powerful Week 1 session on Career Clarity, where mentees explored the Career Compass Framework, we shifted gears to an often-overlooked game changer: strategic positioning.

The theme—“Crafting Your Positioning Statement”—challenged participants to think deeply, not about what they do, but how they communicate their value to the world. Because in a crowded space, if you don’t position yourself intentionally, the world will position you randomly.

Whether you’re a job seeker, entrepreneur, freelancer, or corporate professional, this one truth holds firm: Talent is silent without positioning.

Breaking Down Positioning: Real Examples, Real Results

I kicked off the session with relatable examples to illustrate the power of a strong Unique Selling Proposition (USP).

Take a typical introduction like:

"I build apps." We transformed it into: "I help e-commerce brands automate their customer experience with seamless backend solutions."

That one shift changes everything. It tells the what, who, and impact—clearly and confidently.

Then came the critical question I posed to participants:

“If 10 people had your exact resume, why should someone choose you?”

That question alone stirred deep reflection.

A Practical Approach: From Theory to Execution

Our guest speaker, Elizabeth Dorgbefu, a skilled Customer Service Specialist, Content Creator, and Video Editor, led the workshop-style session. She shared her own positioning statement: "Customer Service Specialist | Content Creator | Video Editor | I Help Busy Professionals Edit & Elevate Their Content."

In a single line, she:

  • Defined her identity
  • Clarified her audience
  • Showed the result she provides

Using a simple framework— [Role] | [Expertise] | [Who You Help] | [The Outcome You Provide] —participants built and refined their own positioning statements.

Mentees moved beyond vague titles like “freelancer” or “entrepreneur,” and instead embraced concise statements that inspire action.

We tackled common pitfalls: ❌ Hiding behind job titles ❌ Copy-pasting others’ bios ❌ Trying to be everything to everyone

And turned to practical steps to make their new statements visible, especially on LinkedIn—their living résumé:

Updated headlines with positioning statements

Reworked bios to align with their direction

Learned to use posts and featured content to build thought leadership

From Hidden Talent to Recognized Leader

Many participants came into the program with:

  • Dreams, but no strategy
  • Competence, but no visibility
  • Momentum, but no direction

By the end of this session, they had the language to communicate their impact, not just their tasks.

Because positioning isn’t a marketing trick — it’s a leadership necessity.

Recommendations for Every Professional

Regardless of your career level—intern or CEO—here’s what you can do today:

  1. Craft Your Positioning Statement Be clear about what you do, who you serve, and what value you provide. Niche down to stand out.
  2. Audit Your Online Presence Does your LinkedIn headline reflect your current direction? Is your profile compelling?
  3. Use Your Story Your experiences build your credibility. Share them intentionally.
  4. Start Small but Stay Consistent A single comment, post, or DM can shape perception over time.
  5. Seek Feedback Ask mentors or peers—does your statement resonate? Do they get it?

Final Thoughts: Influence Begins with Intention

Talent is not enough—visibility matters

Positioning isn’t vanity—it’s strategy

Clarity communicates value. Value attracts opportunity

This week was a powerful reminder that you don’t have to shout to be seen. You just have to be clear and consistent.

As We Prepare for Week 3:

We’ll be diving into Networking, Confidence & Decision-Making. But for now, ask yourself:

  • If someone Googled you today, would they understand your value?
  • Are you the first name that comes to mind when your expertise is needed?

If the answer is no, it’s time to rethink your positioning.

We’re here to help.
