Why You're Not Getting Calls Back – And How to Fix It

If you've been sending out job applications and hearing nothing in return, you're not alone but that doesn't mean your efforts are going unnoticed. In today’s competitive market, small mistakes or missed opportunities can cost you interviews. The good news? Most of them are fixable.

Here are the top reasons you're not getting calls back, and what you can do differently:

1. Your CV Isn't Telling the Right Story

Your CV is your first impression and often your only one. If it's too generic, too long, or not tailored to the job, it might be filtered out before a human ever sees it.

Fix it:

  • Tailor your CV to match the job spec (keywords matter).
  • Keep it clean, clear, and focused on achievements rather than just duties.
  • Add a professional summary at the top that aligns with the role.

2. You're Applying for Roles That Don’t Match Your Experience

Applying for every open role might feel productive, but recruiters and hiring managers are looking for alignment. If your background doesn’t match the job spec closely enough, you might not make the shortlist.

Fix it:

  • Focus your applications on roles that genuinely align with your experience and career goals.
  • If you’re making a career shift, explain why in your cover note or CV summary.

3. You're Missing Keywords or Failing ATS Filters

Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen CVs before a human ever reads them. If your CV doesn’t include the right keywords, it might never reach a recruiter’s inbox.

Fix it:

  • Use keywords from the job ad especially in your skills and experience sections.
  • Save your CV as a Word or PDF document (depending on the job portal requirements).

4. You're Not Following Up

If you've submitted your application through a job board and moved on, you’re missing a critical step. Candidates who follow up often stand out.

Fix it:

  • Reach out to the recruiter directly on LinkedIn. A short, polite message can go a long way.
  • Ask if they’ve had a chance to review your application or if they’re open to a quick intro chat.

5. You're Not Visible Outside of Your Applications

Applying for roles is one method but it’s not the only one. Many opportunities come through visibility, not just applications.

Fix it:

  • Keep your LinkedIn profile updated and active.
  • Comment on posts in your industry.
  • Let your network (and recruiters) know you’re open to opportunities use the “Open to Work” banner if you're comfortable.

6. You’re Not Working With the Right Recruiter

If you’re applying for specialist roles (like in finance, legal, or insurance), working with a recruiter who knows your industry can make a big difference.

Fix it:

  • Partner with a recruiter who understands your niche.
  • Be honest about what you’re looking for we want to help you find the right fit, not just any job.

Final Thought

Getting ghosted after applying can be disheartening but don’t take it personally. Sometimes it’s the market, sometimes it's timing, and sometimes it's just a tweak or two away from working.
