Wings
Recently a friend and I were discussing about the leaders around us and this led to an analyses of various leadership styles that we have seen. I have been dwelling on it and have since summarized that there are broadly two types of leaders.
The first type of leaders are very strong in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the team members. They have an innate sense of judgement, and guide the team members to amplify their strengths while working on their weakness. This leadership style is typically accompanied by transparent and frequent feedback, and they can be brutally frank at times. They can roll up their sleeves and get the work done themselves as a method of mentoring. They generate tremendous respect and the team works really hard to ensure they do not let the leader down.
The second type of leaders are good friends with the team members. They typically have great mentoring capabilities, aided by encouraging words and a protective nature. They are extremely patient and believe in working with the team members to get the job done. They are excellent in communication and will shield team members from difficult situations. They have the fierce loyalty of the team, who grow and flourish under the leader's guidance.
While the first type of leader prefers the team to work independently and learn from failures, the second type nurtures and ensures their success. While the first type moves on when the time comes with the calm knowledge that the future is in good hands, the second type ensures that the team is well recognised and taken care of and the team has a high possibility of reuniting with the leader in the future.
Both leaders value their team, will stand by their team and take great pride in their success.
One gives wings.
The other protects under their wings.
So which kind of leader are you? Which kind of leader have you worked with? Which leadership style do you best work with? Do you sometimes see both characteristics in someone you admire?
