Working through COVID-19: Jumanji in Real Life

It was a classic, and then it was remade. In Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the main characters in the movie, through no real fault of their own, are sucked into a game. It’s a new world, with new surroundings, villains, and obstacles. They know though that they have to work through in order to return to their normal lives.

Trouble is, they don’t know the rules or what they’re really supposed to do. The plan to proceed in the game only really reveals itself once they complete a step. They rely on instinct, inherent knowledge and teamwork to move forward. Throughout the game they also learn about themselves, the new powers that they have and have true moments of self-discovery and empowerment.

As we work through COVID-19, literally and medically, there are no playbooks. We are moving forward with each step as cautiously and optimistically as we can. Brands too are learning about how to build new connections with consumers. Meanwhile we are all managing through real trials and issues in managing everyday life.

We’ve settled into a new reality and are figuring out the game. As the world has moved into self-isolation and social distancing measures, the new playbook is about the value and comfort that a brand can bring. As we see the curve flatten and our new routines become normal, we can then plan how to finish the game.

Spoiler alert, the characters in Jumanji are victorious in the end. They work together, capitalize on each other’s strengths and make personal sacrifices along the way. As a result, they come out wiser and stronger in the real world when they finish.

Each of us, and each brand can do the same.

Well said Devon. It is clearly a brave new world. Change is difficult for most people. But we can all agree that change is the only real constant in life. We just need to look at this situation as a pivot. Take small steps every day to incorporate this new change into our business and personal lives. As humans, we have evolved and grown stronger and wiser from every obstacle in the past. This will be no different! Keep Calm! learn, adapt...Carry On!
