Canon Healthcare US invests into new HQ and R&D in the US

In February, Canon's US Healthcare subsidiary invested in a new US headquarters Centre in Cleveland, Ohio. This $34 million centre will be a hub for research and development, focusing on MRI, CT, molecular imaging, ultrasound, and X-ray technologies. This strategic investment will boost Canon's presence in the US medical imaging market and foster innovation for new products and features.

Additionally, partnerships with local healthcare institutions, such as the Cleveland Clinic, will support multi-centre projects aimed at cardiology, neurology, and musculoskeletal medicine. The facility's proximity to other Canon group companies, like Canon Medical Research USA, along with favourable tax incentives from the State of Ohio's Department of Development, were key factors in this decision.

UK’s large-scale AI trial to shift to breast cancer screening programme to single radiologist reading workflows

AI to assist in breast cancer screening programmes is a hot topic in the medical imaging markets, particularly in Europe. This is due to the reliance on double-reading workflows despite radiologist shortages and burnout. The UK is at the forefront in exploring the use of AI to relieve the burden of double-reading by two radiologists and facilitating a move to single-reading workflows by the radiologist. A new AI trial was announced by the UK Department of Health and Social Care this month, penned EDITH (Early Detection using Information Technology in Health). The trial will assess the use of AI to safely replace one of the radiologists from double-reading workflows. Trial will include close to 700,000 participants and is backed by £11 million in Government funding.

NHS England also launched its premier awareness campaign to increase the number of women attending appointments under the nation’s breast cancer screening programme. Currently, close to 50% of eligible women do not attend their screening exam after invitation. The campaign will focus on highlighting the benefits of attendance to women. This includes messages from healthcare staff to reassure women and personal anecdotes of celebrity breast cancer survivors.

Hologic receives CE mark for Contrast Biopsy Software

Hologic has received a CE mark in Europe for its Affirm Contrast Biopsy Software, designed for use in contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM). This software aids in targeting and acquiring tissue samples in lesions identified through CEM, offering an alternative to MRI-guided biopsies. The technology aims to enhance workflow efficiencies for radiologists and improve patient experience by reducing noise and examination time.

Fujifilm scores a significant C-arm contract with the US military

Fujifilm won its second 4-year imaging contract with the US Military’s for C-arm solutions, following on from a similar agreement previously penned in 2021. Under the $10 million contract, its surgical C-arm solution, the Persona C mobile C-arm, will be deployed across multiple medical facilities for the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). Installations will begin in Q1 of 2025, with the US military facilitating Fujifilm’s US expansion across the medical imaging market. This is down to Fujifilm’s cybersecurity compliance, servicing support, pricing and system specifications. Fujifilm also won a previous contract for its Enterprise Imaging platform with the Department of Defence, which assisted the uptake of its 3D mammography system.
