This year I'm putting my own advice into action. And it's scary.

This year I'm putting my own advice into action. And it's scary.

Wow. The last few days have taken me right out of my comfort zone, and have felt... uncomfortable! I confess, I don't often go very far out of it. Last time was probably last year when I launched the Wonderful Women movement with my Pecha Kucha keynote talk.

Yet as a Career Development Coach I frequently encourage my coachees to take the plunge away from what is safe and known. One of my favourite coaching questions is:

What would you do if you were 10% more confident?

Go on, take a few moments to reflect on that now - what would you do?

I've been in Miami for the kick off of Dorie Clark 's Trajectory Mastermind Programme, surrounded by excellent people, many of whom have already achieved things I am yet to do - authoring books, writing for high profile publications, giving TEDx talks and lots more.

I am comfortable with my self worth but realised that the self belief can take a wobble at such times. There's a close tightrope to tread between learning from the best, versus comparison being the 'thief of joy'!

My word for the two days was BRAVE. I felt the fear, I did it. I am ready for what this year will bring. I read this quote today and it really resonated:

As I reflected on all the insights, ideas and content from the two days, I completed an exercise inspired by Lisa L. Blosser who asked me what my 'persona' would look like if I knew my value or as Dorie said, if I 'played bigger in my head'. I chose to sketch it, and included future focused statements. It was really empowering.

Give that one a go too if you like:

What would you look like if you knew your true value and played bigger in your head?

I also got a reminder from my friend and colleague Kate Faxen who shared this quote with me today:

'When you become complacent in your comfort zone, you run the risk of never moving beyond where you are. Your true potential remains dormant and inaccessible. This may feel like a vague boredom, an envy of others, or an anxiety accompanied by a sense of low self worth...'

This year I will be growing my business, evolving my offering and positioning, saying no (nicely!) and stepping into the next phase, my way. I will be out of my comfort zone and playing bigger.

It’s amazing how just one step outside the comfort zone can open up new possibilities.
