Europe's robots are falling behind - a wake-up call at the right time

While China and the USA are developing their markets for robotics and AI at full speed, Europe is continuously losing ground. The claim to be a global leader in the regulation of these technologies is honorable - but this is also the reason for the lag.

Too much regulation combined with a lack of capital is slowing down innovation - especially for young, technology-driven companies.

Less market share, less impact: the facts

🧠 Artificial intelligence & regulation

With the AI Act, the EU wants to create clear rules for the use of artificial intelligence - especially for so-called “high-risk” applications. For companies, this means additional testing processes, external certifications, stricter requirements for data quality, transparency and traceability. This costs time, money and competitiveness.

🚗 Autonomous driving: Europe on the sidelines

The market for autonomous vehicles is growing at around 50% per year worldwide. However, of over 20,000 autonomous vehicles currently in operation worldwide, only around 500 are in Europe - a market share of just 2%.

🤖 Robotics: market shares are shifting significantly

In 2013, Europe was still responsible for around 30% of industrial robots installed worldwide. Today, the share is only 18%. In the same period, China has increased its market share from 10% to 41%. Companies from the USA and China also dominate the rapidly growing field of service robotics (growth rate: approx. 50% per year) - both technologically and economically.

What specifically slows companies down

  1. Regulatory uncertainty: laws are often already outdated before they are fully introduced - the innovation cycles in robotics and AI are simply too fast.
  2. High classification of many applications: Even smaller robotic solutions (e.g. for cleaning or delivery in cities) are sometimes subject to the same standards as autonomous driving in road traffic - including ISO 26262 or SOTIF.
  3. Additional bureaucracy: Start-ups with limited resources in particular are confronted with complex certifications - before their product is even allowed onto the market.

The challenge: balancing security and progress

Of course, regulation is necessary - especially for new technologies that have a profound impact on our everyday lives. But regulation must not become a systemic competitive disadvantage.

What Europe needs now:

  • Clarity: reliable, practical guidelines for companies.
  • Proportionality: differentiated requirements depending on application and risk
  • Innovation-friendliness: room for pilot projects, experimentation and practical certification paths

Conclusion: Europe has the potential - but it needs to be unleashed in a more targeted manner

The technological basis, the talent and the know-how are there. Now it is important to shape the regulatory framework in such a way that it enables innovation, not prevents it.

Cleaning robots in constant use – with full transparency for each one

At DR Reinigungstechnik, that’s everyday reality. The company relies on state-of-the-art cleaning technology – and on WAKU Care to manage its fleet efficiently, safely, and reliably.

The software is used daily at DR Reinigungstechnik and has quickly proven to be exactly what the team now enthusiastically describes as a “dream system.”

A key benefit is centralized asset management. The team always knows where each robot is located, what condition it’s in, and which tasks are next. Especially with multiple and changing locations, this overview is a real game changer. It helps avoid unnecessary trips, reduces human error, and saves time across the board.

When it comes to maintenance, safety, and warranty, WAKU Care simplifies complexity. DR Reinigungstechnik uses the platform to:

✅  schedule and track maintenance tasks ✅  manage quality checklists ✅  document warranty and service claims ✅  organize and assign work orders across the team

This not only creates internal clarity, but also ensures compliance with all safety and documentation standards – which is essential in professional service robotics.

Another highlight is the automated reporting. After each job, a report is generated and digitally signed – by the DR Reinigungstechnik team and, if needed, by the customer. This provides a transparent, shared basis for reviewing performance and verifying services.

What used to rely on paper, spreadsheets, and manual coordination is now a fully digital workflow – simple, reliable, and efficient. For DR Reinigungstechnik, WAKU Care is more than just a tool – it’s the digital backbone of their robot operations.
