Your January Briefing: What to look out for this year

Your January Briefing: What to look out for this year

The need to advance urgent action on the triple planetary crisis is acute in 2025—climate change, nature, land and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste continue to take a terrible toll on the wellbeing of both people and the planet.

In depth

2024 was a year of highs and lows for the planet. From a groundbreaking deal to fund conservation efforts to alarming reports on greenhouse gas emissions, the year was anything but steady.

This year, countries will reconvene to agree on a landmark global agreement to end plastic pollution. They will also come together for the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, focusing on charting a path toward a more resilient and sustainable future

The seventh edition of the Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7) is expected to be published in 2025, building on the core findings of GEO-6 and other major assessments.

In addition to further planned report launches, here are key moments to keep an eye on:

Hello there, The Industrialized World has the Money and Capacity to Compensate the developing world with the so-called Climate Finance to allow the Global South to mitigate and adapt to Climate Change Hazards (US$100-300 Billion). Industrialized World is UNWILLING to VOLUNTARILY pay up. The Global South DOES NOT have the Means and Capacity to Coerce North to do so. Cooperative Game Theory Starting from the Basic Prisoners' Dilemma of: To Cooperate or Not to Cooperate; what INCENTIVES from the South can be Dangled in front of the North nudge them to Voluntarily pay up? We need Economists to Derive Theoretical Models and Carry out Experimental Research in Cooperative Dynamic Game Theory to see what the South can do (INCENTIVES to North to pay up). OR What the Consumers, Climate Change Activists and Scientists in the North Need to Show their Policy Makers What is at Stake if the North Does Not Compensate the South in the long term.   We need Rigorous Experimental Cooperative Game Theory Exercises to be Conducted to see How and Where both North and South can achieve PARETO OPTIMAL EQUILIBRIA in terms of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation.
