If You’re Still Doing the Housework, Your Business Might Be Paying the Price

If You’re Still Doing the Housework, Your Business Might Be Paying the Price

Housework. That quiet, never-ending list of laundry, groceries, school notes, meal planning, cleaning, scheduling, and being the go-to for everything.

If you’re growing a business and holding most of the household load: You’re not just tired. You’re leaking the energy, time, and decision-making power your business desperately needs.

And that’s not just a personal problem. It’s a business one.

Why Housework Is a Business Issue (Not Just a Personal One)

I tell my clients this all the time: “If you’re not changing it, you’re choosing it.”

We've been sold the story that “having it all” means doing it all, but that’s the myth keeping so many smart, capable women stuck, frustrated, and exhausted.

Most men at the top? They’re not doing it all. They have support structures, often unseen, that allow them to focus on leadership and growth.

But women? We’re often trying to run businesses while also managing homes as the default coordinator, cleaner, and carer.

It’s not sustainable. And it’s not required.

The Mental Load Is Real, and It’s Slowing You Down

You don’t have the same 24 hours as someone without kids… Or someone with a partner who handles the home… Or someone not managing a team and a household.

And yet, we still try to operate like we do.

The result? Burnout. Inconsistent momentum. And a brain full of decisions that aren’t moving your business forward.

So ask yourself: What if your best energy, your sharpest thinking, went toward scaling your business, not just stocking the pantry?

You Don’t Need More Hours. You Need Less Housework.

Here’s what I recommend to my clients (and do myself):

1. Make the Invisible Visible

We use a tool called the Second Shift Sharer, a simple way to track everything it takes to run your home and care for your people. When you see it clearly, you can delegate with intention.

2. Outsource or Share the Load

This isn’t about “not doing your share.” It’s about being strategic with your energy.

Hire help if it’s available to you. Or share the load fairly with your family.

Tasks like:

  • Laundry 🧺

  • Cleaning 🧽

  • Grocery runs 🛒

  • Admin, lawns, or school forms…

These are all important, but they don’t all have to be yours to do.

Teach your kids how to pitch in. That’s not bad parenting, it’s raising capable humans.

3. Protect Your Best Brain Time

You know those hours when you’re on fire with ideas and clarity? Use them for your business, not for cleaning the bathroom.

That’s your highest return-on-investment zone. Treat it like gold.

Let Go of the Guilt

This is a big one. You might be thinking, “But I feel bad if I’m not doing it all.”

Here’s what I want you to know: Guilt doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. It just means you’re doing something different, and that takes courage.

If your kids or partner sees you:

  • Asking for help

  • Delegating with grace

  • Leading your business with energy and joy

  • Creating space for rest and results...

That’s leadership. That’s the example they’ll remember.

Totally agree Sarah. The mental load of managing it all is real. My sister ran a cleaning business for a number of years for very busy people and sold it as "the marriage saver" rather than a cleaning business. She cleaned their homes each week and also had a meal cooked for them when they got home that night. Her take was that it was one less thing they had to think of and disagree about in a very busy week. And lessen the mental load for the person carrying it all.

Such a powerful message, Sarah! “If you’re not changing it, you’re choosing it” really hit home. So many women are carrying two full time roles, and it’s costing their businesses (and wellbeing) more than they realise. Love your call to make the invisible visible. Game changing advice! 🙌
