Since inception, the Foundation’s flagship programme has identified and funded18,500 entrepreneurs and created a digital ecosystem of over one million Africans, as part of a ten-year US$100m commitment to fund, mentor & train young Africans.

Tony’s businesses and the Foundation are inspired by his economic philosophy of Africapitalism, which positions the private sector, and most importantly entrepreneurs, as the catalyst for the social and economic development of the African continent.

The Federal Government of Nigeria granted Tony the titles, Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2003, Commander of the Order of the Niger, in 2012, and Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2022, for his contribution to Nigeria’s economic and social development.

In 2020, in recognition of his business leadership and economic empowerment of young African entrepreneurs, he was named in the TIME100 Most Influential People in the World, and recognised with Belgium’s oldest and highest royal order.

In 2022, TIME again recognised Tony with its inaugural TIME100 Impact list, honouring him alongside five other global leaders who have gone above and beyond to move their industries–and the world–forward.

Tony sits on a number of global boards, including the Global Leadership Council of United Nations Generation Unlimited.

The union emerged as the first successful corporate combination in the history of Nigerian banking.

UBA’s history dates back to 1948 when the British and French Bank Limited (BFB) commenced business in Nigeria and the erstwhile STB and CTB both in 1990. Following Nigeria’s independence from Britain, UBA was incorporated in 1961 to take over the business of BFB. Although today’s UBA emerged at a time of industry consolidation induced by regulation, the consolidated UBA was borne out of a desire to lead the domestic sector to a new era of global relevance by championing the creation of the Nigerian consumer finance market, leading a private/public sector partnership at supporting the acceleration of Nigeria’s economic development, and growing the institution from a banking to a one-stop financial services institution, while spreading its footprints across Africa to earn the reputation as the face of banking in the continent.

Today, United Bank for Africa Plc is one of Africa's leading financial institutions offering universal banking to more than 35 million customers across 1,000 branches in 20 African countries. With presence in New York, London, Paris and Dubai and assets in excess of $21billion, UBA is your partner for banking services for Africans and African related businesses globally.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation is also a pioneer in the adoption of impact investing as a means of catalysing economic change. Unlike most philanthropies, the Foundation sees grants as only one of a set of effective philanthropic tools and believes that for the start up and small and growing business segments, impact investing can be a more sustainable means of capitalisation because of the entrepreneurial rigor that comes with requiring a financial return.

In all that it does, the Foundation is be guided and supported by a committed advisory board who themselves represent excellence in the African and international business worlds.
