    You may have come across numerous chatting application projects, but are they truly scalable? Can they effectively handle database downtime or manage sudden surges in incoming messages? Absolutely not. Imagine a scenario where Server 1 has a capacity for just 10 users. When the 11th user attempts to connect, a new server spins up according to the auto-scaling policy. However, the issue arises when both servers are not interconnected, resulting in users on the first server being unable to communicate with those on the second server. Consequently, this architecture lacks scalability. To address this issue, I've implemented a solution using Redis, PostgreSQL, and Kafka on Aiven Cloud. All incoming messages across servers are routed to a Redis Cluster hosted on Aiven Cloud. Additionally, for message storage, a PostgreSQL service is deployed on Aiven Cloud, which is a straightforward process. However, if there's a sudden surge in messages alongside user numbers, and a high volume of read or write queries strain the database, downtime may occur. To mitigate this, a Kafka cluster acts as a message broker on Aiven Cloud. Incoming messages are directed to the Kafka cluster due to its high throughput capability. Subsequently, a consumer, implemented as a separate Node.js server, gradually processes messages from the Kafka cluster and stores them in the database. If database downtime occurs, the consumer server can be temporarily shut down, resuming once the database is operational again. This approach ensures that no incoming data is lost, while also reducing the database load, rendering the entire backend scalable.

    The Best of Both Worlds: How a Hybrid MPA/SPA Unlocks Scalable, Efficient PWAs 🚀 As a veteran in this field, I've seen a hard swing from server-rendered to MVC, to fully client-rendered SPAs, and a full 180 back to SSR. After the industry swung hard towards SPAs, back when JavaScript frameworks took over, resulting in big bloated, monolithic bundles, slowing down real-world performance, we're seeing a 180-degree move back to server-side rendering. But what if could leverage the best of both approaches? 👉 The best approach for a modern, scalable, and efficient PWA is a Hybrid MPA/SPA. Enter the Hybrid MPA Strategy. Each major route is a separate MPA folder (e.g., /dashboard/, /settings/), meaning native navigation works, and SEO is intact. Each folder has its own index.html + lightweight index.js, allowing local SPA-style navigation using modern, browser-native navigation interception. A shared ESM bundle (app.js) exposes global logic, including state management, an MPA app shell web component, and stuff like localization. Also in the shared bundle are utility functions and shared Web Components (design system). Each page only loads what it needs. Imagine that. All shared stuff is loaded via the bundle, and the page-specific features/flows are only loaded when in scope. 💡No server-side logic or bundler hacks needed—this runs purely on native Web Standards 🤯. 🔥 Why This is the Best of Both Worlds ✅ MPA simplicity: Fast loads, SEO-friendly, and no fragile client-rendering bottlenecks. ✅ SPA-like experience: Fluid transitions, local client-side routing, and instant navigation. ✅ Blazing fast & scalable: Native ESM code-splitting means each page loads only what it needs. ✅ No framework lock-in: Works with pure Web Components (Lit) and leverages modern browser APIs (e.g., View Transitions). 🚀 The Future of PWAs is Hybrid With this setup, we get a PWA that scales effortlessly, avoids SPA bloat, and still delivers an amazing UX.     “What QMS structure should we build now… so we’re not rebuilding it in two years?” That’s the question a founder asked me last month, right after landing their Series A and preparing to expand into two new markets. I’ve heard variations of it from at least six companies in the past quarter alone, which tells me this isn’t just a tactical choice anymore, it’s strategic. As companies grow in new markets, new manufacturing partners, and new product variations, the question of centralized vs. decentralized QMS shows up sooner or later. And there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Here’s what I've seen work (and backfire) across the board: 🛡️ Centralized QMS ✔ Great for small-to-mid-size teams or companies expanding under a single quality umbrella. ✔ Consistency, audit readiness, and precise document control. ❌ Can be slow, inflexible, and frustrating for local teams who need speed and nuance. 🌍 Decentralized QMS ✔ Gives full autonomy to each site, which works for large multinationals or those with distinct product families. ❌ The flip side is duplication, inconsistent compliance, and fragmented oversight. 🔗 Hybrid QMS (the model I increasingly recommend) ✔ Combines corporate-level SOPs with region-specific adaptations. ✔ Allows for shared ownership, but ensures traceability and alignment during audits. ✔ Particularly helpful when simultaneously scaling across the U.S., EU, and APAC. I often help clients transition from decentralized to hybrid as their operations mature, or from centralized to hybrid as they expand globally and need more localized agility.     Building a Hybrid Cloud Solution for NATO Open Source: A Commercial Partnership Opportunity Talking with Mark and Steven during the weekend at #CWIX got me thinking. The NATO Open Source initiative has set the stage for a revolutionary approach to software development and collaboration. By combining centralized and cloud edge services, this hybrid cloud solution has the potential to transform the way nations work together on critical missions. As commercial partners, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon can play a crucial role in building and operating this innovative infrastructure. The proposed hybrid cloud solution would leverage both centralized cloud services and cloud edge services provided by NATO allies. This architecture would enable the sharing of resources, expertise, and data, creating a robust and scalable platform for #devops. Centralized: 🏰 Google, Microsoft, Amazon and other partners could jointly host the central cloud infrastructure, providing a secure and compliant environment for core applications, data storage, and collaboration tools. They could specialise in certain strengths and requirements (e.g. Microsoft for legacy services) 🕰 This centralized cloud would ensure standardized platforms for development and deployment, reducing complexity and improving interoperability. ⚒ By having all major players participate in the construction, there would be no vendor lock-in, and the whole world could benefit from this largest laboratory-like environment for highly secured data transfer and storage. This would also highly increase the redundancy of activities. Cloud Edge Services: ☁ NATO allies can contribute cloud resources and services at the network edge, providing additional processing power, storage, and disaster recovery capabilities closer to operational areas based on common designs and reference architectures. ☁ These cloud edge services would enhance responsiveness and reduce latency for time-sensitive applications, while also ensuring sovereignty and control over data. Benefits of a Hybrid Cloud Solution: 🌍 Flexibility and Scalability: The hybrid cloud provides the flexibility to scale resources up or down based on project needs, allowing for customization and regional optimization. 🚒 Resilience and Redundancy: Distributing services across central cloud and multiple national clouds ensures redundancy and minimizes the impact of outages in any single location. 🔐 Massive resources would allow amazing security, allowing the use of highly evolved machine learning models and quantum cryptography to ensure secrets remain secrets. Naturally, a clear governance model needs to be established to manage resource allocation, service level agreements, and cost-sharing between NATO, nations and commercial partners.
