Many communities in South Africa still face challenges in accessing safe water and proper sanitation. Using the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) approach, we combine freshwater conservation with community empowerment, helping people become active stewards of their land and water. Under this framework, we work with school children and communities (with a focus on women), training them on WASH practices and raising awareness about the connection between human health and ecosystem health. By combining ecosystem restoration with education and engagement, these initiatives reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, strengthen local stewardship, and build community resilience—especially in the face of climate change. #WorldWaterWeek #WWWeek #ClimateAction #SwarovskiFoundation

“Before, the water was open and unsafe—we had no choice but to share it with animals,” says Nophumzile, a resident of Ngcazeni in Upper Mvenyane village. Today, things look very different. With support from the Swarovski Foundation, CSA has been fencing springs to prevent contamination, removing invasive plants to restore water flow, and channeling spring water into storage tanks connected to communal taps. But the real power of this work lies with the people themselves. Once the infrastructure is in place, community water committees take the lead, safeguarding the springs and ensuring this vital resource is protected and managed sustainably for generations to come. #WorldWaterWeek #WWWeek #ClimateAction #SwarovskiFoundation

The Umzimvubu Catchment stands as one of South Africa's critical high-producing landscapes, yet its abundant water resources stand in contrast to its people's daily struggle to access good-quality water. Thirsty invasive alien plants suck up large volumes of water, cattle turn the water muddy and foul, and pollutants taint the spring's freshwater supply. That's why CSA has been hard at work with communities to tackle these challenges and protect these vital sources. Thanks to support from the Swarovski Foundation, we're able to scale our efforts, and the results speak for themselves. 👉 Swipe to see the impact. #WorldWaterWeek #WWWeek #ClimateAction #SwarovskiFoundation

In South Africa, natural springs are vital lifelines for many rural communities, especially in remote areas where formal infrastructure falls short. Springs provide water for irrigation, livestock and crop production, and safeguard food security and economic stability. Yet sadly, environmental degradation is threatening this lifeline. That’s why CSA, together with our partners, has come together with a shared mission: to protect and restore these natural springs, ensuring they remain clean, flowing, and accessible—for the benefit of both people and nature. With the generous support of the Swarovski Foundation, we are able to fence and rehabilitate springs, improve water quality, and empower communities to care for these precious resources for generations to come. #WorldWaterWeek #WWWeek #ClimateAction #SwarovskiFoundation

Our final day took us deeper into the field to see fencing strategies evolve from standard barriers to innovative elephant-deterrent solutions. But we learned that protecting people goes far beyond fences. Conducting this Learning Exchange in the Lubombo TFCA allowed us to see how our Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA) partners ANAC and PPF approach human-wildlife coexistence challenges in a different conservation context, offering fresh perspectives we can adapt for other transfrontier contexts. Through open conversations, we explored how coexistence challenges affect women, men, and young people differently. When we include diverse voices, we create strategies that truly work for the long haul. This blend of practical innovation and inclusive voices that is the blueprint for lasting coexistence across the GLTFCA. This transformation, toward more inclusive, lasting solutions is made possible with the support of the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada 📸: Baptista Bisquete /Maputo National Park Conservation International Peace Parks Foundation Parque Nacional de Maputo South African National Parks (SANParks) GreenMatterZA Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) Endangered Wildlife Trust Frankfurt Zoological Society / Zoologische Gesellschaft Frankfurt Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region NPC EcoAdvisors #GLTFCARestoration #GenderResponsiveConservation #CommunityConservation #TransboundaryConservation #GlobalBiodiversityFramework #ImproveLives

We spent time in the field with community rangers and local teams who are pioneering human-wildlife coexistence strategies. From innovative tentacle fencing to exclusion plots, we witnessed firsthand how community-led solutions are keeping elephants and people safe. Thanks to support from Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, these locally driven solutions are getting the spotlight they deserve. The complexity of these challenges became clear, but so did the incredible progress possible when solutions are rooted in local knowledge, collaboration, and inclusive participation. This is community-centered conservation in action. 📸: Denisio Mulima / Peace Parks Foundation Conservation International Peace Parks Foundation South African National Parks (SANParks) Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region NPC EcoAdvisors Parque Nacional de Maputo Endangered Wildlife Trust Frankfurt Zoological Society / Zoologische Gesellschaft Frankfurt Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) #CommunityLedConservation #GLTFCARestoration #CommunityConservation #ConservationScience
