In addition, considering the large share of liquidity laundered by mafia groups into real estate properties - more than 50% of illegal mafia profits are reinvested into the legal economy, with real estate as one of the preferred sectors of investment (Savona and Riccardi, 2015) - the confiscation policy is a way to harm their business model and earnings. Only 83 properties in total were re-allocated in the same year or the year following the confiscation, as visible in Table A1.
