The first is a question in the General Social Survey asking respondents if they agree with the statement that “large income differences are necessary for America’s prosperity”. We show the trend of this question in Figure 14, overlaid with the bottom 50% income share and a measure of broad economic fairness views in the share of individuals who agree that “hard work is more important than luck”.
