Canadian manufacturers are increasingly alarmed by the sharply diverging trade moves taken by Canada and the United States this week. Earlier this week, the U.S. imposed new sweeping and unjustified 50% tariffs on hundreds of new manufactured steel and aluminum "derivative" products. While global in scope, the impact will fall heavily on Canada, where these goods were moving tariff free under CUSMA. These measures risk shutting many Canadian manufacturers out of the U.S. market entirely - another blunt assault on Canadian jobs, supply chains, and competitiveness that will also raise costs for American manufacturers and consumers. Today, Canada announced that it is dropping many of its retaliatory tariffs on non-steel, aluminum and automotive products that are CUSMA-compliant. CME can support this as a strategic olive branch only if it opens a quick and clear path to a broader agreement with the U.S. that significantly reduce unjustified Section 232 tariffs - including those imposed this week. If a deal doesn't materialize soon, Canadian manufacturers cannot be left exposed. Ottawa must be ready to provide immediate relief to protect jobs and prevent lasting damage to Canada’s industrial economy. Manufacturers need more clarity and action in the days ahead.

🚨 #Tariff Alert: Canada will remove all surtax/retaliatory tariffs on CUSMA-compliant U.S. goods effective Sept. 1, 2025. Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the move following a call with President Trump, noting it preserves tariff-free access for 85% of cross-border trade. 🔹 What changes: Surtax/retaliatory tariffs on U.S. CUSMA compliant goods will be lifted. 🔹 What stays: Canada’s sectoral surtax/tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos remain in place. 🔹 Why it matters: This step signals progress amid ongoing disputes and comes ahead of the 2026 CUSMA review. The White House welcomed the decision as “long overdue,” while broader talks on strategic sectors are set to intensify. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gD6fA9Ah #TradeUpdate #CUSMA #USMCA #Tariffs #CanadaUStrade
