We were honoured this week to welcome Her Majesty Queen Nanasipauʻu of Tonga to UNSW. This was an incredible privilege and important milestone in our shared journey to eliminate cervical cancer across the Pacific. In the words of Dr Falahola Fuka whose leadership is driving the program forward in Tonga, “As we embark on this ambitious journey, the path forward is built on the strength of the Tongan community, the dedication of our health professionals, and the unwavering spirit of collaboration.” https://lnkd.in/gzBaRq66

Last week, ACPCC had the privilege of delivering vital training in Tuvalu on the use of the canSCREEN cervical cancer screening registry. Tuvalu continues to do great work in the cervical screening arena, and it was an absolute pleasure to collaborate with the passionate and dedicated team at the Tuvalu Family Health Association (TuFHA). Together, we worked to strengthen data collection processes that will support even better health outcomes.

For Nerita Leong, cohealth Sexual and Reproductive Health Nurse, Women’s Health Week is all about raising awareness. ”It reminds women, girls and gender diverse people that their health matters, empowering them to be proactive with steps to improve and maintain their health.” Essential in this proactive healthcare is a strong relationship between clients and nurses. ”We build rapport and trust by providing safe, supportive, and confidential care,” says Nerita. “If we can have open, non-judgemental communication, really listen to what our clients are telling us and allow time and space for people to discuss their concerns, we give better care.” This is especially important where language barriers and cultural differences make navigating the healthcare system difficult for some women. Sometimes, says Nerita, stigma also plays a role and part of her job is to help her clients overcome this. ”The more we talk about and normalise women's health and sexual health, the more we encourage people to access the healthcare they need.” cohealth’s nurse-led women’s health service in Footscray offers bulk billed contraception, medical abortions, pregnancy planning, cervical screening tests and more.

Congratulations from us too!
The Hon Candy Broad GAIST GAICD was inducted into the Victorian Women's Honour Roll at a ceremony this week by the Minister for Women, The Hon Natalie Hutchins MP, and attended by former Premier The Hon John Brumby AO, former WHV CEO Marilyn Beaumont OAM, and current WHV CEO Sally Hasler. Candy’s leadership over many decades has transformed the lives of women and girls in Victoria, from driving abortion law reform to helping establish 1800 My Options, which has supported more than 40,000 people with contraception, abortion and sexual health information to date. During the Brumby Government, Candy's tabling of a private members bill for abortion law reform was an act of great courage and sacrifice, putting decriminalisation of abortion squarely on the Victorian legislative reform agenda. WHV staff and Board are delighted to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Candy Broad - a fierce advocate for women’s health and rights! #HonourHer #CelebrateVicWomen

Thousands of women are coming forward to share that their pain is dismissed by healthcare practitioners. From endometriosis to cancer to migraines. On this 'Pain to Power’ day of Women’s Health Week, our CEO Sally Hasler adds that listening isn’t enough. We need health system change to end the gender bias in health. While we continue to push for structural reform, you can also take steps to prioritise your health. Have a look at Jean Hailes for Women's Health's #WomensHealthWeek campaign for practical ways, including their new online tool 'Her Health Check' to ensure that all your health checks are up to date: https://lnkd.in/gg48kQjR

This Women’s Health Week, Prof Marion Saville AM from the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer highlights the importance of keeping up to date with regular cervical screening – one of many essential health checks for women. Health professionals, communities and governments play an important role in ensuring women have access to timely screening. To support this, we've launched Her Health Check- an online tool which provides women with personalised advice about which health checks and screenings they may need. 🔗 Explore the tool and share it with the women in your communities here: https://bit.ly/4g5GptY #WHW2025 #WomensHealthWeek #WomensHealthWeek2025 #SayYesToYou #HerHealthCheck #CervicalScreening
