The Leukaemia Foundation stands with Australia to help cure and conquer every blood cancer – with care.

About us

The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national charity dedicated to helping those with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders survive and then live a better quality of life. It exists only because of the generous and ongoing support of the Australian community. Leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma are all types of blood cancer and they can develop in anyone, of any age, at any time. Another 53 Australians are diagnosed each and every day. Although improved treatments and care are helping more people survive, sadly someone loses their life to blood cancer every two hours. In fact, blood cancer combined is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, and the second most common cause of cancer death, claiming more lives than breast cancer and melanoma combined. • Australia is facing a critical shortage of registered #stemcell donors – and the solution lies with younger Australians. 🙋 Today, hundreds of students at The University of Queensland signed up to become donors - performing their own cheek swabs to send to the registry in just minutes through the Stem Cell Donors Australia website. 🗓️ Ahead of World Marrow Donor Day this Saturday, we’re encouraging everyone aged 18-35 to be a hero for a #cancer patient by signing up to become a stem cell donor. At any time, over 1000 people are urgently waiting for a donor match as part of their life-saving treatment in Australia - around 90% of those waiting have #bloodcancer. The UQ event was led by Bronwyn Tong, whose son Rowan (Register For Rowan) needs to find a suitable #donor to help save his life as he continues treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). 🏃♀️ Charlotte Dukino also helped rally fellow students to sign up weeks after fundraising for the Leukaemia Foundation through her Emmanuel College fun-run, Blue Dog Dash. Her beloved dad was diagnosed with AML and, after battling the disease for five months, sadly died in May 2024. 🩸 For many people living with cancer like leukaemia, a stem cell transplant may be their only chance of survival. 📲 To sign up and for more information, visit the Stem Cell Donors Australia website. Thank you to our event team, Harper Tinsley, Bill Stavreski, Prue Cripps, Madeleine Quy, Jack Doonar, Jemma Bury, Jake Taranto, Kelly Fisher and Valentina Thiering 👏

  • 📸 Today we marked a special milestone - 50 years of supporting Australians impacted by #bloodcancer - with an event at Queensland Parliament House alongside the Hon. Tim Nicholls MP, Minister for Health & Ambulance Services.   📍 The Leukaemia Foundation was founded in #Queensland in 1975, and MPs from across the state met with our CEO, Chris Tanti, to reflect on our history and discuss what the next 50 years of cancer care could look like.    Care that’s more accessible, responsive, and equitable for every community, regardless of your postcode.   🗣️ And it's a story that's being shaped by those who've lived with or beyond #cancer. Their voices are guiding how we design and deliver cancer care for the future.   A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, including David Lee, Brendan and Roxanne Hodda, who've lived through blood cancer, as well as some of the earliest members of the Leukaemia Foundation.   📲 For more information, as well as expert and personalised blood cancer support, visit our website 👇 https://lf.org.au/4oXuhiF

It can be quite sad when a person passes away without a Will, as there’s no opportunity to define their unique and personal legacy.   When this happens, they’re said to have died ‘intestate.’ In these instances, the law defines how an individual’s estate will be distributed.   A lifetime of work and treasured possessions is divided according to a legal formula. Final wishes, such as the desire to leave a sentimental item to a friend or bequeath a portion of an estate to a trusted charity, can’t be honoured if they’re not recorded in a Will. Another consequence of not having a Will is the absence of a chosen executor. A court-appointed administrator will distribute assets in line with the relevant state or territory’s laws.   Generally, a spouse is considered the priority in the eyes of the law, followed by children. If there are no surviving relatives, the estate may even pass to the state – an outcome that is rarely intended!   My favourite part of my role as Senior Philanthropy Manager is having the privilege of walking alongside supporters as they consider the legacy they want to leave beyond their lifetime.   In my experience, what comes through strongly is that, while a Will is a legal document, for many people it’s also a reflection of their values and how they want to be remembered.    I work with many individuals who’ve been impacted by blood cancer, either as patients themselves or through a loved one, and they choose to leave a gift in their Will to the Leukaemia Foundation to lighten the load for others facing blood cancer in the future.    Their decision to leave a gift is the ultimate act of love – for a family member, a friend, or even for future patients they’ll never meet. Charitable bequests can take many forms, from a cash donation to significant assets like houses or shares.   These kind-hearted gifts give future generations the opportunity for better outcomes, improved treatments, greater hope, and the chance to live well after diagnosis.    And that’s a remarkable legacy. 📸 Leukaemia Foundation supporters Helen Holdey, Jan Desbrow, Dr Wendy Scaife and Elizabeth Mann

It’s surprising how many well-known figures have passed away without leaving a valid Will.    Icons like Aretha Franklin, Prince, and Amy Winehouse all had one thing in common – they left this world without an estate plan in place.   Without a Will, a person’s voice is lost, and their true legacy remains unwritten. And in Australia, approximately 60% of adults don’t have a legal Will.    Many assume they don’t have “enough” or are too young to need a Will. But life is so unpredictable.   My siblings and I wrote our Wills last year, taking advantage of the partnership between the Leukaemia Foundation and Safewill to do so for free.    It may sound like a sobering topic, but it was actually a really heartfelt way to come together as a family and think about what matters to us, our shared values, and how we want to be remembered.    It's comforting knowing that we understand each other’s wishes and, as each other’s executors, can ensure they’re fulfilled.   Leaving a gift in your Will is a powerful act of love that will help create a future where blood cancer no longer ends lives, and every person diagnosed in Australia has the care and wraparound support they need to live well 💙

  • 🩸 September is Blood Cancer Month This week, the Leukaemia Foundation is calling for national attention to the devastating impact of #bloodcancer on women in Australia. Blood cancer takes an immense and brutal toll on women’s lives beyond the physical fight for survival. Women face longer, more intensive treatment regimens than many other cancers, often requiring lengthy hospital stays or relocation to a capital city to access specialist care. Treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy can also cause irreversible and heartbreaking infertility. This Blood Cancer Month, we urge you to: 🗣️ Talk about blood cancer 📲 Share this post 🔗 Visit leukaemia.org.au to learn more 👇 https://lf.org.au/4oXuhiF Cancer care isn’t just about treatment. It’s about identity, support and your life 💙 If you’d like blood cancer support, please connect with our team of Healthcare Professionals on 1800 620 420 📞
