It’s day 2 at Open Source Community Day, organised by the Eclipse Foundation and EUCloudEdgeIoT. Today’s highlights include: 🌟 Rosaria Rossini (Eclipse Foundation) kicked off the day and encouraged attendees to attend our next global event, the Open Community Experience in Brussels (21-23 April 2026). 🌐 Daniel Izquierdo Cortázar, PhD (Bitergia) called for a more holistic approach to managing open source risk beyond licence compliance and security vulnerabilities, advocating for industrial practices that prioritise the long-term health and sustainability of software projects. 🌍 Francisco Picolini (OpenNebula Systems) shared the origins of Open Nebula and its involvement in major European initiatives such as IPCEI, highlighting the company’s key role in EU-funded projects. 💻 Antonio García Domínguez (University of York) presented the #MOSAICO project, a multi-agent platform where AI agents collaborate to ensure consistent software quality, with the aim of achieving long-term sustainability through a vibrant open source community. 💡 Julien Satti (ETSI) discussed how ETSI is evolving its standardisation processes for a software-driven world, using open source to bridge the gap between research and standardisation. 💬 Vasileios Theodorou, PhD (Intracom Telecom) introduced OpenOP, an open source framework designed to standardise and share impactful innovations across domains, fostering a collaborative and structured approach to development. #opensource #EclipseFdn #EUCloudEdgeIoT #community

💡 The Problem of Data Discovery and Data Quality: How Dataspaces Can Help AI - Insights from Javier Valiño at Open Source Community Day in Madrid. AI algorithms thrive on data, but discovering high-quality, trustworthy datasets remains a major challenge. Much of the data we need exists, but it’s locked away in silos, and data owners are reluctant to share. Dataspaces offer a solution: a trusted environment where organisations can publish data with clear access controls. Instead of exposing raw data, providers can share only what matches specific parameters, enabling secure and targeted discovery. The road ahead focuses on three key questions: ➡️ How do we ensure interoperability across dataspaces? ➡️ How can we collaborate on shared specifications? ➡️ How do we standardise protocols so communities can adopt them at scale? The Dataspaces Working Group is tackling these challenges through standardisation and open source collaboration to make these trusted ecosystems a reality. #opensource #AI #dataspaces #EclipseFdn EUCloudEdgeIoT

The future of digital innovation depends on sustainable #opensource infrastructure. Too often, critical software is maintained by a small group of contributors, while large-scale adopters give little back. Learn how businesses can help close this gap and ensure long-term sustainability in #EclipseFdn Executive Director Mike Milinkovich’s latest blog: https://hubs.la/Q03Kz6D50 #PreserveOpenSource #SoftwareSupplyChain #OpenSourceResponsibility

Key takeaways for the first part of the Open Source Community Day in Madrid, organised by the Eclipse Foundation and EUCloudEdgeIoT. 🌟 Rosaria Rossini kicked off the event with a clear goal: to create an environment to share and connect. 💡 Rolf Riemenschneider pointed out that edge computing is reshaping the future of software. Europe must lead with modular, open building blocks and strong governance, enabling interoperability, AI integration, and sustainable platforms for industries from farming to automotive. 🌍 Philippe Krief stated that Europe’s digital sovereignty depends on cross-border, cross-industry collaboration. Open source strengthens competitiveness, saves time and money, and empowers communities to set (not follow) global standards. 🌱 Yiorgos Marinellis introduced OpenAgri and presented open source as a catalyst for digital farming, offering affordable, connectivity-friendly tools to make agricultural digital solutions more sustainable and accessible. ⚡ Rute C. Sofia introduced the CODECO Project, which drives community-led innovation with transparency, modularity, and privacy-by-design, supporting smart cities, mobility, energy, and manufacturing. 🔗 Lara Lopez spoke about open source in NEMO PROJECT and EU Project ICOS, which deliver secure, dynamic deployment and offline data integrity, enabling intelligent synchronisation and resilient applications. ☁️ Rafael Vaño Garcia presented StratOS and aerOS Project. StratOS aims to unify edge, cloud and IoT environments through advanced orchestration and management capabilities. 💻 Athanasios Stratikopoulos mentioned that to achieve EU sovereignty, software must evolve with hardware. The AERO Project accelerates Europe’s cloud ecosystem by aligning open software with cutting-edge hardware. #opensource #EclipseFdn #research David Remón Javier Valiño Ivar Grimstad Rosaria Rossini Natalia Loungou Philippe Krief André Gomes

🌍 At the Open Source Community Day in Madrid, Philippe Krief highlighted Europe’s need to collaborate across borders, industries, and research to stay competitive. Key messages: 💡 Open source has eaten the world, even a simple “thank you” is a valuable contribution. 💡 Europe faces fragmentation, falling market share, and rising global competition. 💡 Collaboration multiplies strength: research, industry, and software vendors working together can set our own community-driven standards. 💡 Open source saves time, cuts costs, and fuels innovation. 🔑 To achieve digital sovereignty, Europe must define its own standards and embrace open source as part of its DNA. “If you don’t set standards, you are following them” #opensource #digitalsovereignty #collaboration #Europe EUCloudEdgeIoT

Eclipse Foundation reposted this
🌍 Open source infrastructure is the backbone of modern software. From npm to PyPI, Maven Central, https://hubs.la/Q03Kw2zy0, Packagist, and open-vsx. But this global backbone is fragile, underfunded, and sustained by too few. That’s why the OpenJS Foundation, OpenSSF, Alpha-Omega, Eclipse Foundation, Python Software Foundation, Rust Foundation, Sonatype, and Packagist Conductors have come together in a joint open letter. 💡Usage must align with responsibility. To keep open infrastructure strong, secure, and accessible for all, we need sustainable models of support. 🔗 Read the full letter: https://hubs.la/Q03Kw3Fy0 #PreserveOpenSource
