Koken is niet eenvoudig. Het ene moment pruttelt het water rustig op het vuur. Let je even niet op, dan stroomt de boel plotseling over. In onze samenleving is het niet anders. Tegenstellingen worden groter, uitspraken feller, de ruimte voor toenadering kleiner. Het Hannah Arendt Instituut klopte bij ons aan voor een campagne tegen schadelijke polarisatie. En zo toverden we Wim Opbrouck uit onze bovenste schuif en laat het vervolg van onze harmonieuze verstandhouding zich nog het beste samenvatten als lepeltje-lepeltje.

In tijden dat de potten al eens overkoken.... ligt er best een houten lepel in je schuif. Samen met het Hannah Arendt Instituut, ontwikkelden we bij Bridgeneers een campagne om gemeentebesturen beter bekend te maken met hun wetenschappelijk onderbouwde opleidingen rond polarisatie, desinformatie en haatspraak. Elke gemeente kreeg van ons een houten lepel in de bus. Wim Opbrouck laat zien hoe je de kalmte bewaart - in de keuken én in het debat. En mijn spaghettisaus kookt sindsdien nooit meer over. Merci voor het vertrouwen Cynthia Van Der Heyden en Christophe Busch!

Yesterday evening, a night which turned out to be overwhelming and wonderful at the same time, I succesfully defended my PhD dissertation titled "Friends or foes: does polarisation really undermine democracy?". It marked the end of a four-year long trajectory where I overcame many difficulties, grew as a person and academic, learnt more than I could have imagined, and met fantastic people along the way. Thank you to all the beautiful people that supported me during these past four years. Thank you to both of the universities that made this possible: Vrije Universiteit Brussel and University of Warwick. Thanks to Emilie van Haute, Eelco Harteveld, Ece Ozlem Atikcan for being brilliant jury-members who provoked my thinking and engaged with my work. Thanks to Karen Celis, Vjosa Musliu and Eline Severs for doing a fantastic job as chairs at the internal and external defenses. And of course thank you to Didier Caluwaerts and Michael Saward for being outstanding supervisors that have guided me along the way. I had the opportunity to investigate a topic that worries me deeply: the relationship between polarisation and democracy. Amongst others, I found that not all types of polarisation are problematic, and that democratic institutions have certain leverage as a buffer against its worst effects. I am grateful for the great journey this was and look forward to continuing this research to keep growing as a scholar and as a human being - to help understanding our complex world a little better. Scientia vincere tenebras! Conquer darkness through science!

Het Hannah Arendt Instituut is alweer een doctor rijker. 🎓✨ En wat voor één! 👨🎓 Gisteren verdedigde Kamil Bernaerts (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) zijn doctoraat 𝙁𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙤𝙚𝙨. 𝘿𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙥𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙮? 🎤📚 Zijn onderzoek doorbreekt het idee dat polarisatie per definitie slecht is. 💥 Hij toont dat verschillende soorten polarisatie ook heel verschillende effecten hebben op de democratie.
