From September 9–11, imec organized the 17th Symposium on Ultra Clean Processing of Semiconductor Surfaces (UCPSS), a leading international forum on wafer cleaning, contamination control, and defect metrology. At this year’s edition, Dr. Paul Mertens presented a course on the basic principles of cleaning, covering ☑️ How contaminants interact with surfaces and fluids ☑️ Mechanisms for their removal ☑️ Guidelines to design cleaning mixtures for specific applications This foundational session was tailored for both newcomers to the field and experienced staff refreshing their knowledge, strengthening the community’s shared expertise in ultra-clean processing. A big thank you to the UCPSS organizers and participants for another successful and inspiring event in Leuven! #imec #UCPSS2025

Within a few years, metal pitches within the most critical back-end-of-line layers of advanced logic and memory chips will drop below 20nm. For these layers, Cu dual-damascene integration – the industry’s workhorse for fabricating interconnects – will run out of steam.   In a recent article published in Semiconductor Engineering, interconnect experts highlight the potential of ruthenium (Ru) as an alternative conductor and discuss new metal integration schemes. View comments by imec’s Marleen van der Veen and Christoph Adelmann on the promises and challenges of using Ru in the most critical interconnect layers – backed by imec’s pioneering work on alternative conductors and innovative integration process of dual-direct metal etch (DDMe).
