About us

Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS Canada) is a student-run non-profit organization in Canada dedicated to strengthening Canada's future in space by providing post-secondary students with unique projects, research programs, and professional development opportunities in the Canadian governmental, industrial and institutional space sectors. We work to develop pioneering projects, such as the Canadian Reduced Gravity Experiment Design Challenge and Young Space Entrepreneurs Competition. These projects, along with Ascension, our national conference, give opportunities for students to learn key technical skills and participate in exciting and relevant experiences for their professional development. To date, we've provided many students with unique hands-on experiences in business development and microgravity research. This year in addition to providing these opportunities to more students than ever before we are expanding the amount and types of activities we offer. So stay tuned for many exciting opportunities!

I'm delighted to share that I have been appointed as Lead for the Canadian Space Conference (CSC) 2026 with SEDS-ÉEDS Canada! After being part of this wonderful organization for a year, I am honoured to continue working and achieving another successful event with a team of brilliant individuals. The CSC is one of Canada's top student led space conferences, showcasing emerging leaders and professionals within the Canadian space sector, and notable advancements in space exploration and innovation. As Lead, I will be supporting the vision of SEDS Canada and executing this national event through leading an amazing team and collaborating with industry partners. I am beyond excited to take on this role and I look forward to learning and giving back to a massive community that I have been involved in since the beginning of my studies. Here's some memories from last year's conference! #STEMLeadership #WomenInSTEM #SEDSCanada

Over the last weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to attend wSEDS's Inaugural Conference, 2025 Cosmic Vanguard: Women Defying Gravity, at Toronto Metropolitan University. As a woman studying aerospace engineering and learning about the industry and its opportunities for the first time, this conference allowed me to connect with so many experienced, passionate, and driven women in the industry and learn from their lived experiences. Some highlights: ⭐ Capt. Amanda Ales's session on using failures as a launchpad for future successes without letting them negatively affect your mental health. ⭐The fireside chat with MDA Space representatives Beth Lymer, Ph.D and Sehaz Dayal, where they expanded on their experience in the industry working up to their current job and the skills and habits that they find most useful in their day-to-day working on large-scale technical projects with numerous team members. ⭐The all-women panel featuring Capt. Amanda Ales, Dr. Parshati Patel, PhD, Cert.APM, and Jagriti Luitel on their learnings in the industry, from unlearning early misogynistic conditioning to dealing with power structures while understanding the complex relationship between EDI efforts and merit-based rewards. ⭐Dr. Shawna Pandya, MD's video on how she stayed motivated, persistent, and demanding in her career, and the opportunities she earned as the fruits of her labour. ⭐Dr. Erica Caden and Dr. Christine Kraus presentations about SNO+ and other innovative experiments at SNOLAB which aim to use neutrinos and our current understanding of particle physics to answer rudimentary questions about the universe and the matter found within. ⭐Dr. Mariam Naseem talk on her experience on a non-linear path into the industry, and how changing interests and opportunities are never a barrier to entry into space. ⭐Madison C. Feehan's presentation on her startup, Space Copy, and the creative work they are trying to do to innovate 3D printing opportunities in space, whether to quickly repair broken parts or optimize resource utilization by printing with lunar regolith. ⭐Hira Nadeem, current space systems engineer for Planet and President and Co-Founder of the Zenith Canada Pathways Foundation speaking on a panel alongside Dr. Kristen Cote, Ph.D. where she shared how mentorship experiences and having good leaders to follow make all the difference in paving the way for future generations to break into the industry. I am very grateful to Noordeep Cheema, Diba Alam, and the rest of the SEDS-ÉEDS Canada team for their amazing work in making such a motivating weekend. Their contributions to ensuring the conference's success were a reminder of how engineering as a whole is a field moved forward by teamwork, collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and support.

  • 🚀 Cosmic Vanguard: Women Defying Gravity officially launched this weekend as the first conference under wSEDS, a new initiative by SEDS Canada — and what an unforgettable experience it was! Over two days, we gathered students, professionals, and advocates from across Canada to celebrate women leading in space. From panels on inclusive design and space entrepreneurship to powerful keynotes and student presentations, every session brought inspiration and impact. 💫 A huge thank you to our guest speakers, panelists, workshop hosts, student presenters, and moderators — your insights, stories, and leadership made this event truly meaningful. And to our organizing team and volunteers — thank you for bringing this vision to life. Your hard work created a space where women in aerospace don’t just belong — they thrive and lead. The wSEDS Conference this weekend was an incredibly impactful and inspiring experience. I had the chance to hear from so many amazing speakers each sharing powerful stories and advice that I’ll carry with me. Shawna Pandya, MD spoke about staying persistent, adaptable, and curious in your journey. Amanda Ales opened up about imposter syndrome, mental health, and pushing through failure. Beth Lymer, Ph.D and Sehaz Dayal from MDA Space emphasized how communication and multidisciplinary teamwork are key to successful missions. Parshati Patel, PhD, Cert.APM shared practical advice on how to communicate complex ideas in a way that resonates. Erica Caden and Dr. Christine Kraus from SNOLAB gave a fascinating talk on neutrino physics and how it helps us understand the universe. During day 2, Mariam Naseem encouraged us to follow our passion and trust that it will lead us to where we’re meant to be. Abigail Lee and Aleeza Batool reminded us how powerful it is to use our technical backgrounds to solve complex problems and contribute to the space industry. Kristen Cote, Ph.D. from Wyvern spoke about what it takes to bring entrepreneurial ideas to life in the industry and to not limit ourselves just to what impresses but also what interests us. Thank you to Diba Alam, Noordeep Cheema and the entire SEDS-ÉEDS Canada team for organizing such a meaningful weekend. I left feeling inspired, supported, and excited for what the future of space holds.🚀💫🌠
