Assembly of First Nations AGA 2025 – DAY ONE RECAP 🪶 Day one of the 2025 AFN Annual General Assembly marked a powerful and emotional start to the AGA, hosted right here on Treaty One Territory. It began with a Grand Entry welcoming leadership, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, and guests who came to gather from across Turtle Island. Opening remarks were shared by Chief Gord BlueSky of Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, who offered a heartfelt welcome and a moving tribute to the late Chief Jim Bear. We also heard from AFN Regional Chief @Willie Moore and National Chief Cindy Woodhouse - Nepinak, among others. As Day One set the tone for the week ahead—highlighting themes of unity, leadership, and reaffirming Treaty and other First Nation relationships with he Crown—Day Two will continue the momentum, diving deeper into key priorities and discussions that will shape the path forward for AFN’s member Nations. We are proud to host the AFN here in our homeland and look forward to the days ahead of their leaders gather to carve the paths forward for their communities. #AFNAGA2025 #TreatyOne #FirstNations #Canada #FNPoli

HEART OF A BEAR, SPIRIT OF A WARRIOR 🪶 It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of a legend in both Treaty One Territory and across Turtle Island. Treaty One Nations extends our deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and community of Brokenhead Ojibway Nation on the passing of former Chief Jim Bear. Chief Bear devoted his life to the service of his people, holding office for eleven terms with Brokenhead Ojibway Nation and bringing with him decades of wisdom, leadership, and advocacy. He was a Residential School Survivor who turned his lived experiences into strength—working tirelessly to build bridges among First Nations, other levels of government, and peoples from all walks of life—to create a stronger, more inclusive future. Throughout his remarkable career, Chief Bear helped to establish the Southeast Resource Development Council Corp. (SERDC), the first Indigenous Jr. A Hockey Club, the South Beach Casino & Resort, and the Manitoba First Nation School System. He served as Chairperson of the Treaty Land Entitlement Committee of Manitoba, Chair of the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation, and played an instrumental role in the negotiations to repatriate Naawi-Oodena to the Treaty One Nations. Chief Bear’s impact extended far beyond his community. He was recognized with numerous honours, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal, the Canadian Race Relations Foundation Community Champion Award, and more. Most recently, he was presented with the Treaty One Lifetime Achievement Award, a recognition of his lifelong dedication to advancing the rights, sovereignty, and prosperity of First Nations. He will be remembered not only as a leader, but as a mentor, a voice of encouragement, and a symbol of resilience. As Chief Gord BlueSky shared of his predecessor, Chief Bear always reminded us: “Water off a duck’s back”—words that captured his enduring positivity and calm strength in the face of challenges. Treaty One Nations honours the life, legacy, and teachings of Chief Jim Bear. May he journey safely to the Spirit World, and may his family and Nation find comfort in knowing his work and spirit will continue to guide future generations. Chii-miigwech, Chief Jim Bear.

Naawi-Oodena Development Reaches New Milestone with Federal Support Last week, Treaty One Nations welcomed the Honourable Mandy Gull-Masty, Minister of Indigenous Services, to Naawi-Oodena to mark the next phase of development at one of the largest First Nation-led Economic Development Zones in Canadian history. During her visit, Minister Gull-Masty toured the site, including the new Oodena Gas & Convenience, which opened in June 2025 as the first business on Treaty One’s 109 acres of reclaimed land. She also announced more than $789,000 in new federal funding to support infrastructure planning and design for the next stages of development, bringing total federal investment in Naawi-Oodena to nearly $5.5 million. This funding will help advance planning for new residential, commercial, educational, cultural, health, and recreational spaces—including nearly 5,000 housing units—that will create lasting opportunities and strengthen the local economy for both First Nations and all Manitobans. Naawi-Oodena is more than a development project—it is the reclaiming of our Nations’ presence in the heart of Winnipeg. As the vision continues to take shape, it stands as a place of opportunity, growth, and pride for all seven Treaty One Nations. #NaawiOodena #TreatyOne #EconomicDevelopment #BuildingOurFuture

Celebrating Indigenous Design at Treaty One 🪶 Today, we were proud to welcome Destiny Seymour—a talented Anishinaabe interior designer, textile artist, and Peguis First Nation band member—to our office for a special lunch and learn session. Destiny is the founder of Indigo Arrows, an Indigenous-focused design studio based in Treaty One Territory. She walked us through her work and her new collaboration with Milliken Flooring, showcasing carpet and flooring samples inspired by patterns found on ancient pottery and bone tools created by our local Indigenous ancestors. These designs bring culture, history, and identity into modern spaces in a beautiful and innovative way. We’re very excited to be able to include some of Destiny’s flooring patterns in future Treaty One developments, while her textiles are also being considered for furniture and office interiors. To support Destiny and explore her full collection, visit: https://indigoarrows.ca. Miigwech, Destiny, for sharing your vision with us and contributing to the future of Treaty One! #TreatyOne #NaawiOodena #Anishinaabe #FirstNations #IndigenousDesign #PeguisFirstNation #IndigoArrows #SupportLocal
