👏 That’s a wrap for the 2025 CERN openlab summer student programme! How do you capture a summer of science, collaboration, and discovery in just one word? Some of our students gave it a try and their answers say it all! But it’s not only about what the students experience. This programme also makes a difference for CERN teams and supervisors, who highlight how the students’ energy, creativity, and fresh ideas contribute directly to advancing CERN’s work. Watch the video to hear the supervisors perspective on the importance of programmes such as the CERN openlab summer student one. 🙌 A big thank you to all the students, supervisors, and everyone who made this edition possible! 📅 Applications for the 2026 CERN openlab summer student programme will open around November 2025. Keep an eye on our website and LinkedIn for more details! #CERNopenlab #SummerStudentProgramme #LifeAtCERN #STEM #CERN Natalia Diana Szczepanek Daniele Massaro, PhD Amine Lahouel Thomas James

🔌 🔋 Join us for CERN's Virtual Thematic Day on Electromechanical Power Supply Equipment🔋 🔌 CERN’s large-scale research facilities depend on high-performance electromechanical power supply equipment to ensure smooth and efficient operations. This Thematic Industry Day connects CERN technical experts with industry specialists to discuss forthcoming opportunities for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of: ✔️ Power transformers ✔️ Busbars and racks ✔️ Switchgears ✔️ Disconnectors ✔️ Distribution panels and assemblies ✔️ Other low- and medium-voltage supply components 💡The event will also provide insights on CERN’s procurement procedures. In the afternoon session, participants will have the chance to join B2B meetings, connecting with CERN’s technical and procurement teams, as well as networking with other companies in the field. 📅Date: 15th October, 10AM (CET) 🌍 Location: Virtual If your company is based in a CERN Member or Associate Member State and specialises in design, supply, installation, testing, or commissioning of this equipment, this is a great opportunity to engage with CERN! 🔗 Register here: https://lnkd.in/dNfXSj26 💻 Register for the B2B meetings here: https://lnkd.in/dHHB-PUA

A decade of gravitational waves🌌 This week, we celebrate the announcement of an extraordinary physics result – the first direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, finally confirming a prediction made by Albert Einstein in 1916. The by-now familiar GW150914 signal, recorded on 14 September 2015, is attributed to the merger of two massive black holes, occurring at a distance of about 400 Megaparsecs. In these pictures, we see Barry C. Barish giving a talk #AtCERN following the announcement. In 2017, Barish – together with Rainer Weiss and Kip S. Thorne – was awarded The Nobel Prize in Physics "for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves" . Looking forward, CERN and the Einstein Telescope collaboration have recently signed a new agreement to advance Europe’s next-generation gravitational-wave observatory, since the enabling technologies for the ET overlap strongly with those required for accelerator facilities such as the LHC and future colliders. 🎯 CERN openlab summer student project spotlight! This summer, Francisco Resende from the Technical University of Munich is contributing to the upgrade of the ATLAS experiment for the High-Luminosity LHC, the most ambitious upgrade of the experiment yet. As part of the Next Generation Trigger Project he is exploring ways to increase in particular the performance of the muon trigger system, even beyond the original plans for the upgrade. 📈 With the CERN HL-LHC delivering unprecedented data rates, ATLAS needs to significantly improve how it selects muon tracks at the first-level trigger. For the first time, this will include muon tracking data from precision monitored drift-tube (MDT) chambers. Francisco’s project explores how machine learning can be integrated into this real-time environment to boost the experiment’s discovery potential. His work includes: 🔸 Developing and training neural network models to improve muon reconstruction 🔸 Optimising algorithms for deployment on FPGA devices 🔸 Comparing ML-based approaches with the baseline analytic algorithm in terms of trigger efficiency and muon momentum resolution By bridging AI techniques and high-speed detector electronics, Francisco’s research aims to make ATLAS even more capable of capturing rare and exciting physics events in the high-luminosity era. #CERNopenlab #SummerStudentProgramme #ATLASexperiment #MachineLearning #FPGA #ScientificComputing #CERN #NextGenTriggers #HiLumiLHC ATLAS Collaboration

Join us at #CERNScienceGateway on 25 September for an exclusive preview screening of the documentary “Les vrais chercheurs ne savent pas ce qu’ils cherchent…” – “Real researchers don’t know what they’re looking for”. Co-authored by Jean-Luc Perreard and Cédric Klapisch, this film delves into the mysteries of the #HiggsBoson, the Big Bang, and more. It offers a poetic, thoughtful, and humorous insight into #CERN and its researchers, exploring the key scientific questions they aim to answer. The screening will be followed by a discussion with CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti, architect Renzo Piano and John Elkann, President of Fondazione Agnelli.
