The European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS)

Please consider submitting to our Twin Transition track at the European Conference on Information Systems 2026 in Milan! We held a dynamic PDW at AOM in Copenhagen just a few days ago, a PDW that sparked a creative debate on the emerging concept of Twin Transition – the integration of digital and green transformations to address climate challenges and promote sustainable development. It was really an inspiring conversation, and it’s only the beginning. Now, we want to keep that momentum going and broaden the dialogue within the Information Systems community. What exactly does the Twin Transition entail, and how can we shape it together? There are several key gaps inviting exploration: Clarifying the Twin Transition: How do we define and conceptualize the synergy of digital and green transitions in practice. How is it different from Green IT and Digital Sustainability? What does “twin” mean for different contexts, and how can a combined digital-and-sustainability approach better address the climate crisis and business value? Key Research Questions: How can digital innovation and sustainability initiatives reinforce each other rather than compete? What new governance models or organizational capabilities are needed to support this dual transformation? How do we handle potential tensions or trade-offs when pursuing digital and environmental goals simultaneously? Missing Pieces: Where are the blind spots in current research and practice? (e.g. are we adequately considering business value, social justice implications, policy frameworks, or metrics for success in twin initiatives?) Identifying these gaps will help focus our efforts on the most pressing issues. Collaboration with Organizations: How can we collaborate with industry, government, and other stakeholders to pilot solutions and ensure these twin transformations lead us toward a sustainable, desired trajectory? Co-creating knowledge and solutions with practitioners is crucial to avoid ivory tower type research, and instead truly lead the Twin Transition in the right direction. We invite fellow researchers to join us to keep the conversation going on these topics (and more!) and to establish Twin Transition as a frontier in IS research, examining the nexus of digitalization, sustainability, and societal change. In essence, we aim to bridge disciplinary silos and foster holistic approaches to the Twin Transition. 🏆 Thrilled to share that my colleagues and I have been honored with the Claudio Ciborra Award at ECIS 2025 for our research on "Predicting Complementarities in Multi-Platform Ecosystems: A Graph Neural Network Approach"! https://lnkd.in/d2SxbWJ5 This recognition means so much to our team - Rainer Alt from Leipzig University and Alfred Zimmermann from Reutlingen University. Together, we've developed a novel methodology using Graph Neural Networks to identify complementarities across platform boundaries, addressing a critical gap in how we understand complex digital ecosystems. Our approach moves beyond traditional single-platform analysis to capture the intricate relationships that drive value creation in today's interconnected platforms. Using the Amazon Alexa Skills ecosystem as our case study, we demonstrated how GNNs can help platform owners and developers discover new opportunities for innovation and collaboration. The Claudio Ciborra Award recognizes research that bridges technology and organization - exactly what this work aims to achieve by providing practical tools for managing multi-platform ecosystems. As I am sitting in the #airport waiting to check-in for my flight home I reflect back on #ECIS2025 proceedings. I met incredible people and forged lifelong bond with them. Many photos were shared so I am picking one that will remain in the memory. Thank you to all who shook hands, connected, engaged into deep discussions on topics for Academia: Research and Teaching, Social, Science & Technology, Philosophy and more. The joke was: Everything in the conference had "AI" in it, even #AIS (Association for Information Systems) Andrew Burton-Jones thank you for showing resilience in the face of adversity during the ECR/MCR consortium and throughout the conference. Amany Elbanna, you have put so much work in preparation for this and much more during the sessions despite the challenges Dina Koutsikouri and the sessions participants thank you for the valuable insights shared about papers. The hosting university of applied science in Amman, you were so generous with everything. Applied Science University. 🚀 Two research papers presented at ECIS 2025 Honored to have contributed to this year’s European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) with two paper presentations. 📱 Mind the App: Platform Workers' Algorithmic Management Experiences Isabell Lippert, Dix Gräubig, Benedikt Lorenz Mayer, Martin Wiener In this study, the authors explore how platform workers experience algorithmic management through their primary—and often only—work interface: the app. By analyzing Google Play Store reviews with topic modeling, the authors reveal how app-related issues shape behavioral responses, such as switching between platforms. The study introduces the concept of Algorithmic Management Experiences (AMX), which frames AM as user experience (UX). 🏛️ A Taxonomy of the Design Characteristics for the Chief Data Officer Role in the Public Sector Isabell Lippert, Karoline Glaser, Martin Wiener In this study, the authors developed a taxonomy of public sector CDO roles, based on literature and qualitative interviews. It highlights the distinct challenges and solution spaces of municipal CDOs in contrast to their corporate counterparts. Notably, this study was conducted as part of the Smart Cities Model Project (MPSC), funded by the City of Dresden, the German Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building, and the KfW Bank. I am pleased to share that my completed research paper, "Beyond Bottom-Up vs Top-Down: When and How of Infrastructure Governance Over Time?", was successfully presented—via hybrid format—at The European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) 2025, held in Amman, Jordan. This study offers a longitudinal perspective on corporate infrastructuring, moving beyond traditional governance models of top-down and bottom-up approaches. We provide empirical evidence of when and how various governance mechanisms come into play during the inception, development, and adoption of corporate infrastructure, specifically in the case of a traditional oil and gas company operating on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). ✨ I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to my phd supervisor, Prof Eric Monteiro, and co-supervisor Thomas Østerlie for their invaluable guidance throughout this journey. Read my research proposal, it’s online! I’m so excited to share that my research proposal has been successfully presented at the TREO Forum, part of The European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) 2025, taking place in Amman, Jordan.  Although the tensions in the Middle East did not allow for my personal discussion of the article, it was an honour for me to have the chance of getting my very first research proposal published online. 🎯 I am looking forward to deepening the project further as my Master’s Thesis, aiming to develop a tailored gamified digital solution for assisting older patients with in-home care. 🇯🇴 ISE at ECIS 2025 in Amman, Jordan! 🌍 We were excited to attend this year’s The European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS)! Thank you to Paula Jaki, Christopher Diebel, Jan-Hendrik Schmidt, and Daniel Stäcker for representing ISE at ECIS 2025.
