🌍 The Global South is leapfrogging in EV adoption while the West still claims it cannot happen In Germany (and much of the Western world) we often hear a condescending narrative: “Developing countries will never manage the EV transition, they cannot afford it, the infrastructure is missing, the power supply is unreliable.” This narrative imagines an electrified mobility future as something far away, maybe possible one day. The reality is different: in many places of the Global South it is already happening, and in some cases they are overtaking us: ➡️ New EV registrations in Asia and Latin America jumped over 60% in 2024 ➡️ In Vietnam, around 40% of new cars are already electric ➡️ Indonesia doubled its share to about 7.5% in just one year, despite heavy fossil fuel subsidies ➡️ Countries like Ethiopia are going further by banning imports of combustion vehicles ➡️ Local champions such as VINFAST (Vietnam),Togg (Turkey), and ATLAS eMobility Group (Morocco) are reshaping the market 💡 Why is this happening? For many countries in the Global South, the EV transition is not only about climate. It is about: ➡️ Cutting expensive oil imports and improving trade balances ➡️ Reducing air pollution in megacities ➡️ Building local industry and jobs with domestic EV brands ➡️ Using cheap renewables like hydro and solar to power mobility These arguments should be just as convincing in the West. Yet our debate often stays trapped in range anxiety or the defense of the status quo. 🚀 The takeaway Electrification is not a distant dream for developing countries. It is a present reality. The EV revolution is not waiting for the West, it is already reshaping mobility globally, with the South leapfrogging ahead in key areas. At Pionix we see tremendous interest in the openSource EVerest Project e.g. from India and Africa. EVerest is the perfect foundation to leapfrog the technology curve, not only for the South.
