Social Business Initiative (EC 2011) definiert ein soziales Unternehmen als "ein Unternehmen, dessen primäres Ziel darin besteht, soziale Wirkung zu erzielen, anstatt Gewinne für Eigentümer und Aktionäre zu erwirtschaften; und das seine Überschüsse hauptsächlich zur Erreichung dieser sozialen Ziele einsetzt; und das von sozialen Unternehmern in verantwortlicher, transparenter und innovativer Weise geführt wird, insbesondere unter Einbeziehung von Arbeitnehmern, Kunden und Interessengruppen seiner Geschäftstätigkeit".
