Introducing the European Boss Ladies 🛠️👩🔧 The Boss Ladies project by Divers - Lige muligheder for alle, in collaboration with EuroSkills Herning 2025, is building a strong ambassador corps of female apprentices from all over Europe who can inspire other young girls and women to pursue a career in tech and trades. In this third and final video of a series featuring the European Boss Ladies ambassadors, you can meet Janina Beck from Germany. She’s 21 and training as a metalworker at Metallbau Otto Genzel GmbH For Janina, every day is a chance to learn something new, and during her apprenticeship, she has had the opportunity to build on her own and see her work all around town. She envisions a future where women are an equal part of the trades. Today across the EU, women remain highly underrepresented in technical professions. In fact, less than 5% across the listed metal industries are women (EURES 2023). That is why Janina is passionate about promoting visibility and equality for the next generation. The European Boss Ladies initiative is supported by Villum Fonden. 🍄MAYBE DON’T TELL THE KIDS Congratulations to Villum Young Investigator, Assistant Professor, and Curator of Fungi at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, João Araújo. His research on zombie fungi has now reached The Wall Street Journal. João Araújo’s research shows how a previously unknown fungal species infects the minds of trapdoor spiders living in Brazil’s Atlantic rainforests.🕷️The fungus manipulates the behavior of its host, often making the spider hyperactive and causing it to move away from its usual habitat, before consuming it. It’s always amazing when science reaches a broad audience. 🌿 How will climate change impacts the way plants reproduce? Mass flowering – the synchronized, interannual production of pollen by plants – is essential for forest regeneration and ecosystem health. But how will climate change impact mass flowering? Will it persist as the planet warms? At the Globe Institute, Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen, Ana Prohaska is investigating this question with a DKK 7 million Villum Young Investigator grant. Her project uses fossil pollen DNA and morphology to uncover how past global warming events affected mass flowering in key tree species – and what that means for the future. 👉 In this short video, Ana shares how her research could help predict the resilience of forest ecosystems and the services they provide to people and wildlife. The Villum Young Investigator programme supports talented early-career researchers with the potential to make a significant independent contribution to the technical and natural sciences. In this second video of a series featuring the European Boss Ladies ambassadors, you can meet Sarina Bardill from Switzerland. She works as a plumber at Hälg Group, and when she knocks on a customer’s door, she is often met with comments about her gender. But Sarina does not let that hold her back! She loves proving that she knows her trade and sometimes even outperforms her male colleagues. Did you know? Only 1% of plumbers in the EU are women (EURES 2023), despite the trade facing a labour shortage. Sarina is helping change that picture and inspiring more women to find their place in technical professions. The European Boss Ladies initiative is supported by Villum Foundation. RESEARCH BREAKTHROUGH IGNITES HOPE Each year, we produce over 400 million tons of plastic - most of it ends up as waste. But what if we could change that - starting with the kinds of plastic that have always been thought impossible to recycle? Professor Troels Skrydstrup from Aarhus University has developed groundbreaking chemical methods to break down types of plastics that were previously impossible to recycle - such as polyurethane foam and epoxy resins. ♻️ Using catalysis, his team can transform plastic waste into new chemical building blocks, enabling the reuse of materials like mattress foam and glass fibers. This paves the way for a future where plastic isn’t just recycled - it becomes part of a more sustainable chemical industry. With a Villum Investigator grant starting in 2025, Troels Skrydstrup will continue his pioneering work toward a greener chemical future.
