🧪 Leading Spanish hospitals implement the MAF Test to revolutionize breast cancer treatment: Inbiomotion, the IRB Barcelona-ICREA spin-off, announces the launch of the MAF Test® in select hospitals across Barcelona and Madrid starting today 👇 ✅ Widespread adoption of the MAF Test® could significantly enhance survival rates for nearly 80% of the 33,000 early-stage breast cancer patients diagnosed annually in Spain, according to 2024 data from the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM). ✅ The MAF Test® offers predictive insights into the prognosis of breast cancer patients, enabling oncologists to identify those who could benefit from adjuvant bisphosphonate treatment (commonly used for osteoporosis) to prevent metastasis. Additionally, it helps pinpoint patients whose prognosis may worsen with bisphosphonate treatment, sparing them from unnecessary, ineffective therapies. ✅ The MAF Test® is now available in Spain, Portugal, Italy, South Africa, and the UK. 🤝 Meet Dr. Stefanie Kristin Wculek, a leading expert in innate immune biology 👇 ✅ Dr. Wculek developed an effective pre-clinical cancer immunotherapy based on a subset of dendritic cells as part of a large international consortium of industrial, clinical and basic scientists. ✅ Moreover, she discovered metabolic differences of tissue macrophages that depend on their organ of residence, which leads to therapeutically exploitable vulnerabilities of those cells. ✅ Overall, her work established the surprising diversity of functions and dependencies of dendritic cell and macrophage populations in vivo in health and non-infectious inflammatory diseases. In 2023, Dr. Wculek joined IRB Barcelona as Group Leader to head the Innate Immune Biology laboratory. 🎥 Meet her here! ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dHPkeTKN #IRBScience #MeetOurScientists #ImmuneSystem #Immunotherapy #InnateImmuneBiology #Research

🤝 #IRBBarcelona Group Leader Cristina Mayor-Ruiz has co-authored a Perspective in #MolecularCell proposing the creation of a #EuropeanAlliance to accelerate the development of proximity-induced therapies. ➡️ These innovative therapies aim to harness molecular proximity to eliminate or modulate disease-related proteins that were previously considered undruggable. New tools, including AI and machine learning, are expected to help accelerate progress. 📝 The proposal was developed from six leading European institutions: Goethe University Frankfurt, CeMM, AITHYRA Research Institute for Biomedical Artificial Intelligence, University of Dundee, EPFL and #IRBBarcelona, and highlights the need for stronger academic–industry collaboration to advance this field. 🚀 🗣️ As Cristina Mayor-Ruiz notes, “Harnessing proximity-induced pharmacology offers unprecedented opportunities to modulate disease-driving proteins once deemed undruggable.” 🔝 The proposed Alliance seeks to pool expertise, infrastructure, and digital platforms across Europe (and beyond) to train future leaders, boost translational research, and accelerate the development of next-generation proximity-based therapies. 🔬 A breakthrough in tackling aggressive childhood cancer: A rare case of renal rhabdoid tumour—diagnosed in only about 12 children each year in Spain and with an extremely low survival rate—has opened new avenues for advanced cell therapies👇 💡 In a paediatric patient, a positive response to treatment allowed researchers to identify immune cells with strong anti-tumour activity in this cancer type. 💉 After chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the patient began immunotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI)—a strategy that boosts lymphocytes’ ability to detect and destroy tumour cells. 🩸 For over a year, scientists from the Centro Nacional de Análisis Genómico (CNAG), IRB Barcelona, and the Barcelona Children's Hospital Sant Joan de Déu monitored the patient’s immune system through blood samples. 🧬 Published in Annals of Oncology, the findings showcase how cutting-edge sequencing technologies can detect tumour-reactive immune cells in various tissues—especially in blood—paving the way for personalised immune therapies for rare and aggressive cancers. 📖 Read the full news here ➡️ https://bit.ly/44wayyq *** 📌 DOI: 10.1016/j.annonc.2025.05.530 Alexandra Avgustinova Inés Sentís Carreras Barcelona Children's Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Fundació de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu Centro Nacional de Análisis Genómico (CNAG) Omniscope ICERCA - Centres de Recerca de Catalunya Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) SOMM Alliance Parc Científic de Barcelona #IRBScience #ChildhoodCancer #CancerResearch #Immunotherapy #PaediatricCancer #PediatricCancer #Research

🙌 #IRBBarcelona has contributed to a pioneering study that, for the first time, recorded the process of human embryo implantation in real time using a 3D model of the uterus. This advance holds great potential for improving IVF and deepening our understanding of infertility. Learn more in this post by Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) 👇
🔬 Researchers at #IBEC record for the first time the real-time and 3D implantation of a human embryo Using a laboratory-developed platform that recreates the outer layers of the uterus in three dimensions, this groundbreaking achievement opens a new era in our understanding of the mechanisms of human fertility and could have a profound impact on assisted reproductive treatments. 📉 Embryo implantation failure is one of the main causes of infertility and is responsible for 60% of spontaneous miscarriages. Until now, this critical moment could only be studied through static images taken at isolated points of the process. Thanks to this new technology, it is now possible to observe the implantation dynamically and in great detail. Researchers discovered that the embryo exerts significant mechanical force to penetrate the uterine tissue, a surprisingly invasive process never before captured with such precision. This study was made possible thanks to the collaboration with embryologists from the Reproductive Medicine Service at Dexeus Mujer – Hospital Universitari Dexeus.
