- 3. Who is Emily Charlton? Emily Charlton has been our language assistant since the start of this school year. She is helping us in the two groups involved in the bilingual program not only in our English classes but also in Maths and Technology. We thought it would be a good idea to ask her a few questions put forward by some of our second year students so that the readers of this page would get to know her a little better. Here is the report of the interview:
- 4. Where are you from in England? I’m from Newcastle, in the north east of England , quite near the border with Scotland. What is Newcastle like? What is there to see and do? It used to be an industrial town. Now it’s more modern and cosmopolitan with lots of Art centres and Music centres. It’s a bigger town than Gijon. One of the main attractions is the river, called the Tyne. It’s a very popular town for going out, clubbing and shopping. The football team is quite famous and people are obsessed with football. - 5. What kind of music do you prefer? I like lots of different types of music: rock, reggae, jazz,… Music is an important part of my life. I really enjoy going to rock concerts. My favourite band is “The white stripes”. There are two people in the band, brother and sister. Their music is quite experimental and it’s based on the blues. What do you like doing in your free time? Do you like sports? In my free time I like drawing, reading and doing some cooking. I go to taekwondo in a gym in Gijon. I go rollerblading too. I think it’s good to keep active not only for your body but also for your mind.
- 6. What makes you feel good? Having a barbecue with friends. Listening to some good music in the sunshine. Have you travelled to any other countries apart from Spain? I went to Mauritania for a year when I was 18. It was an amazing experience. I worked in a dairy and one of my tasks was to give milk to schoolchildren.
- 7. Do you speak any languages apart from English? I spent a year in Salamanca with an Erasmus grant. I learnt Spanish there. And when I was in Mauritania I learnt French and Arabic.
- 8. What did you study at university? I studied geography at Bristol University. It was a four year degree. I graduated last year. It was an interesting degree, especially what we learnt about global warming and climate change. When you were at school were you a good student? I think so. I didn’t always do my homework but I was good enough to pass my exams and be successful!
- 9. Why did you apply for the job as language assistant? I really enjoyed my time in Salamanca and this job was a good opportunity to return to Spain and also to have the experience of working in a Spanish school. What do you think about Calderon School? I think everybody is really friendly. On the other hand, I find it a lot more laid-back than my own school was. The students are much friendlier with the teachers. There is no obligation to wear a uniform and that also makes a big difference.
- 10. What is your opinion about the bilingual program? In my opinion, it’s a great opportunity for young people to become more fluent in English and they get the chance to speak English more. I think the standard of English in the classes that I attend is very good compared to the level English students have when learning other languages. What is the most interesting thing you find about being in Spain? Probably the cultural differences with my own country and the little subtleties you notice when you talk to people. I also enjoy listening to Spanish people speaking English badly!
- 11. What is the most difficult thing about being in a foreign country? I would say it is not being able to phone my friends as often I’d like. What do you like best about Asturias? The countryside is brilliant. Asturias has everything: mountains, sea…People are really nice and their accent is not hard to understand. I am a vegetarian so I haven’t tried the typical food here.

- 13. Traducción de la entrevista Emily Charlton es nuestra auxiliar de conversación desde el comienzo del curso. Nos está ayudando en los dos grupos involucrados en el programa bilingüe, no solo en las clases de ingles sino también en matemáticas y en tecnología. Pensamos que sería una buena idea hacerle unas preguntas elaboradas por algunos de los alumnos de 2º para que los lectores de esta pagina puedan conocerla un poco mejor. Aquí está el contenido de la entrevista:
- 14. ¿De qué parte de Inglaterra eres? Soy de Newcastle, en el norte de Inglaterra, bastante cerca de la frontera con Escocia. ¿Cómo es Newcastle? ¿Qué se puede ver y hacer allí? Era una ciudad industrial. Pero ahora es más moderna y cosmopolita, con muchos centros de arte y centros de música. Es una ciudad mayor que Gijón. Una de las principales atracciones es el río, llamado Tyne. Es una ciudad popular para salir, para ir de clubs y para hacer compras. El equipo de fútbol es bastante famoso y la gente está obsesionada con el fútbol.
- 15. ¿Qué clase de música prefieres? Me gustan muchos tipos diferentes de música: el rock, el reggae, el jazz,… La música es una parte importante de mi vida. Disfruto mucho al ir a conciertos de rock. Mi grupo favorito es “The White Stripes”. Hay dos miembros en el grupo, hermano y hermana. Su música es bastante experimental y está basada en el blues. ¿Qué haces en tu tiempo libre? ¿Te gustan los deportes? En mi tiempo libre me gusta dibujar, leer y cocinar. Voy a clases de taekwondo en un gimnasio de Gijón. También hago patinaje. Pienso que es bueno mantenerse activo, no solo para tu cuerpo, sino también para tu mente.
- 16. ¿Qué te hace sentir bien? Disfrutar de una barbacoa con mis amigos. Escuchar algo de buena música al sol. ¿Has viajado a algún otro país aparte de España? Fui a Mauritania por un año, cuando tenía 18 años. Fue una experiencia increíble. Trabajé en una compañía de productos lácteos y una de mis tareas era dar leche a los estudiantes.
- 17. ¿Hablas algún otro idioma aparte del Ingles? Estuve un año en Salamanca con una beca Erasmus. Allí aprendí español. Y cuando estuve en Mauritania aprendí francés y árabe. ¿Qué estudiaste en la universidad? Estudié geografía en la universidad de Bristol. Fue una carrera de 4 años. Me gradué el año pasado. Fue una carrera interesante, especialmente cuándo estudiamos el calentamiento global y el cambio climático.
- 18. ¿Cuándo estabas en el colegio, eras una buena alumna? Creo que sí. No siempre hacía los deberes pero fui lo suficientemente buena para aprobar mis exámenes y tener éxito. ¿Por qué solicitaste el trabajo de auxiliar de conversación? Disfrute mucho en Salamanca y este trabajo sería una buena oportunidad para volver a España y también para tener la experiencia de trabajar en un instituto de España.
- 19. ¿Qué piensas del instituto Calderón? Creo que todo el mundo es muy amistoso. Por otra parte encuentro que es mucho más relajado que mi antiguo instituto. Los alumnos tienen mucha confianza con los profesores. Los alumnos no están obligados a llevar uniforme y eso marca una gran diferencia. ¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre el programa bilingüe? En mi opinión es una gran oportunidad para la gente joven para que hablen inglés con más fluidez y ellos tengan una oportunidad para hablar inglés más. Creo que el nivel de inglés en las clases a las que asisto es muy bueno comparado con el nivel que los alumnos ingleses tienen cuando aprenden otros idiomas.
- 20. ¿Qué te parece lo más interesante de estar en España? Probablemente las diferencias culturales con mi país y las pequeñas sutilezas que notas cuando hablas con la gente. También disfruto escuchando al los españoles que hablan ingles mal. ¿Cuál es la mayor dificultad de estar en el extranjero? Yo diría que es el no ser capaz de llamar a tus amigos tan a menudo como te gustaría.
- 21. ¿Qué te gusta más de Asturias? El campo es fabuloso. Asturias tiene de todo: montañas, mar, …La gente es muy agradable y su acento no es difícil de entender. Soy vegetariana así que no he probado la comida típica de aquí. Gracias por dedicarnos tu tiempo, Emily. De nada.
