  • #2: To start my keynote. I should set the stage and describe the business context we all operate on. This is the typical part of the presentation when *I* am supposed to educate *YOU* about the problems that *YOU* have… ...but you know them very well. The simple fact that you are here, in front of me, dedicating me your time, implies that you are aware of your problems already. You are here for solutions, not to hear more about your problems. So I think I’ll skip this part.
  • #3: The shift to cloud computing With every shift, user collaboration and participation has increased.
  • #7: Mainframe Innovation happening within the four walls of a few very large companies. Very hierarchical in nature and data accessibility centralized around sr. mgmt. One computer, thousands of users
  • #8: Client server Changed the way enterprise accesses, distributes, and uses data Data is no longer under the tight control of Sr. Mgrs. and Management of Information Systems staff, it is more readily available to middle-rank personnel and staff Easier access to data information, lead to better coordination among people from all levels both within and outside organization
  • #9: Internet era The beginning of the “technically sophisticated users,” open standards are being adopted, barriers to collaborate internally and externally again greatly minimized, data is fairly accessible and as a result the rate of innovation sees a significant uptick
  • #11: Cloud shift The walls between users and vendors have basically crumbled down. Data is readily available. Rate of innovation has increased significantly yet again due to on-demand self service, rapid elasticity, ubiquitous network access, etc. How did we get here? With every shift, user participation increased, access to data became easier and easier, standards become more open, and users gain more control Cloud computing was a user-driven innovation and enabled by open source technology. Clouds wouldn't exist without open source. Clouds wouldn't exist without collaboration.

  • #15: Technology choice = Innovation choice This is the most important takeaway I argue that a technology choice today is a choice of innovation models Infrastructure choice last a long time – choice for cloud being made now It's not a choice about feeds and speeds today – Chinese menu Needs to be a thoughtful decision about what you will get over the next 10 years
