Connecting innovation and healthcare.
About us
Health Innovation Hub Ireland (HIHI) was established by Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation and the Department of Health, supported by Enterprise Ireland (EI) and the Health Service Executive (HSE) to drive collaboration between the health service and enterprise. This unique joint government initiative, offers companies the opportunity for pilot and clinical validation studies and the health service access to innovative products, services, devices, that they may otherwise not be exposed to. HIHI works to impact Irish business and Irish healthcare in three key areas: •Industry: Through HIHI, enterprise can access Ireland’s leading health professionals who will pilot and test innovative products, services and devices. Acting as a broker, HIHI matches companies with relevant clinical teams, overseeing a study of each product in an Irish clinical setting. •Healthcare: A central part of the HIHI remit is to assess ideas and concepts for healthcare innovation from all staff – clinical and non-clinical. HIHI is an open door to all healthcare staff to assess ideas to solutions they have encountered in their work. HIHI acts as mentors and advises on taking an idea and developing it into a service or product. •Education: Through an active educational programme, HIHI is engaging right across hospital structures by teaching a new way of thinking to find creative solutions to health challenges. Delivering a series of five HIHI workshops and a diploma in healthcare innovation, HIHI is embedding an innovation culture in Irish healthcare.

Health Innovation Hub Ireland is delighted to launch another clinical evaluation study. This new Irish research sets to tackle childhood obesity with a breakthrough probiotic strain and examines the merits of microbiome over current pharmaceutical solutions As children across Ireland return to school this autumn, a groundbreaking new Irish study offers renewed hope in the fight against childhood obesity—an issue that continues to rise nationwide. Led by Dr. Harriet Schellekens, PhD, Senior Lecturer at University College Cork, and supported by Health Innovation Hub Ireland (HIHI), the research introduces a promising microbiome-based intervention centred on the probiotic strain Bifidobacterium longum APC1472. Speaking as the clinical evaluation study is launched Dr. Schellekens highlighted that: “Obesity is not just a metabolic condition—it’s also deeply behavioural and neurochemical. Our work shows that by acting on both the gut and brain, B. longum APC1472 could form part of an early intervention toolkit for children at risk of obesity.” She also stressed the importance of supporting healthy eating habits early in life, when patterns are still forming. The research focuses on the gut-brain connection—how the microbes in our gut can influence how we feel and what we crave. By understanding this link, Dr. Schellekens said “The aim is to develop practical, science-based ways to help children build a healthier relationship with food that lasts into adulthood." Health Innovation Hub Ireland conducted the clinical evaluation study and Dr Michael Twomey PhD. Senior Clinical Research Manager at HIHI highlighted the value of this solution. “This probiotic may provide a safe, scalable, and science-driven solution. It’s about empowering families and clinicians with more options—especially those that address both the body and brain.” Read the full clinical evaluation study here. https://lnkd.in/e_DdGCZs Enterprise Ireland Health Service Executive Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Department of Health - Ireland Jennifer Murnane O Connor Zara Lonergan, MSc Dr Tanya Mulcahy PhD University College Cork UCC Medicine and Health APC Microbiome Ireland
