Over 50% of under-five child deaths occur in the #neonatalperiod — and in many limited-resources settings, specialized nursing staff are the first and often only line of care for fragile #newborns. On #InternationalNeonatalNursesDay, we recognize the essential contribution of nurses — especially in the #GlobalSouth, where they manage complex and #lifesaving interventions, frequently without adequate #training, support, or visibility in #healthpolicies. Yet their voices remain underrepresented: 🔹 In a recent review, less than 2% of global #researchfunding was awarded to researchers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), despite #nurses there provide the bulk of care. 🔹 Neonatal caregivers in LMICs are rarely authors or participants in research that shapes the very systems they sustain. At the Chiesi Foundation, we stand with our partner COINN (Council of International Neonatal Nurses) to reaffirm that strengthening #neonatalnursing capacity is critical to reducing #newbornmortality, building resilient health systems, and achieving #healthequity. Today, we celebrate not only these professionals as #caregivers, but also as educators, leaders, and advocates - and we commit to supporting their training, recognition, and #leadership across all settings. #HealthForAll #EveryNewborn #NeonatalCare #HealthEquity #ChiesiFoundation

At the Ngozi Regional Hospital in #Burundi renovation works have just been completed, turning the outdoor spaces around the maternal and child health department into safer, cleaner, and more welcoming common areas for the families of mothers and newborns. This initiative, carried out in collaboration with Amahoro pro Africa, was made possible through the joint support of IMA Group and the Chiesi Foundation. Together, we contributed to improving the hospital's environment and hygiene — transforming shared spaces into functional areas of #care and rest. The works included: 🔹 A new Kangaroo Mother Care shelter 🔹 Shaded areas and green spaces 🔹 Paved and covered walkways 🔹 Drainage and sanitation upgrades 🔹 Renovated social spaces and complementary services These changes reflect our belief that #qualitycare is not just about medical support, but also respect, comfort, and humanity for #everynewborn and their family. #HealthForAll #GlobalSouth #NewbornCare #ChiesiFoundation

In many hospitals across sub-Saharan #Africa, lifesaving #respiratorycare remains out of reach for too many #newborns suffering from respiratory distress syndrome (#RDS). To help bridge this gap, the #BubbleCPAP is being introduced at the Ngozi Regional Hospital in #Burundi – bringing a low-cost, effective, and non-invasive solution to one of the country’s key facilities. Led by Amahoro pro Africa and supported by the Chiesi Foundation, this initiative marks a vital step toward improving survival chances for small and sick newborn babies in low-resource settings, where mechanical ventilation is rarely available. With #equipment already delivered by the Foundation and the medical area set up, we are now entering the project first phase: developing local #training materials and building capacity through a #collaboration between local staff and a team of Italian #neonatologists. The second phase will include hands-on training for doctors, nurses, and midwives, followed by remote quality monitoring. Thanks to this project — we are taking another step further towards reducing #neonatalmortality and improving newborn health in Burundi. #HealthForAll #HealthEquity #NeonatalCare #BCPAP #InternationalCooperation #ChiesiFoundation

As part of our mission in #Uganda, we were pleased to meet with various researchers’ teams from the Global Health Collaborative (GHC), a partnership involving the Mbarara University of Science & Technology (MUST), the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), and the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Center for Global Health, along with other local and international academic institutions. The meetings offered a chance to explore shared approaches, underline the importance of applied #research, and discuss future collaborations - especially in #respiratoryhealth, from the #neonatal period through adulthood. A special thanks to Dr. Crystal North and Dr. Peter Moschovis from the Massachusetts General Hospital for facilitating this meaningful connection. By building networks with like-minded initiatives and stakeholders, we aim to co-create #sustainable solutions that respond to local needs and strengthen global knowledge exchange. #HealthEquity #HealthForAll #GlobalHealth #SharedKnowledge #RespiratoryCare #ChiesiFoundation

Together with WeWorld, we’re advancing #KangarooCare (KC) in #Burundi, expanding this practice from hospitals to primary health centers and surrounding communities in the Ngozi province. Building on previous phases led with Amahoro pro Africa, this effort brings #KC — a proven, low-cost intervention that improves survival and development outcomes for #preterm and low birth weight babies — closer to where families live. This new phase responds to the need of making KC practices more #accessible beyond hospital settings, ensuring continuity of care within communities and strengthening family support from birth onwards. Co-funded by Fondazione Marchesini ACT, it focuses on: 🔹 Training #healthcare workers and community health agents 🔹 Adapting KC protocols to #community settings 🔹 Strengthening follow-up and education at home 🔹 Promoting safe, respectful, and effective #newborncare Thanks to our partnership with WeWorld, we’re working to ensure that #everynewborn has the chance to survive and thrive, no matter where they’re born. #HealthForAll #HealthEquity #NeonatalCare #InternationalCooperation #ChiesiFoundation

On the occasion of the #NESTPartnersMeeting 2025, the Chiesi Foundation convened the first in-person meeting of its #TechnicalAdvisoryGroup (TAG) for the #NESTModel — a team of African health experts providing strategic guidance to improve #neonatalcare in sub-Saharan Africa. Launched in April 2025, the TAG aims to improve the quality and impact of the NEST Model by aligning its implementation with local needs and global #bestpractices. This session focused on the following key priorities: 🔹 Strengthening NEST indicators for improved #monitoring of quality and impact 🔹 Supporting partners in turning theory into practice with the launch of a regional survey on #CPAP use via ANA, to inform the future development of practical guidance 🔹 Enhancing competency-based #training and local research capacity of health professionals, including nurses, with a focus on #KangarooCare We thank Prof. Ousmane Ndiaye (Foundation’s Technical Advisor and Vice President of APLF), Prof. Solange Ouedraogo (Head of Department at CHU de Bogodogo), and Dr. Franck Houndjahoue (Chair of ANA’s Research Committee), for their leadership in shaping the future of maternal and neonatal health across the #GlobalSouth. #NeonatalHealth #TAG #HealthEquity #HealthForAll #ChiesiFoundation
