This week #UNFPA,@Jhpiego, @OOAS, and a diverse group of health partners came together for a vital cause: saving mothers’ lives. Our focus was on highlighting the essential role of midwives in PPH prevention and management using the latest global recommendations to dramatically reduce this leading cause of maternal death. I leave inspired, hopeful, and energized by colleagues at the forefront of this effort. They are on the front lines managing PPH in the hardest to reach areas. They are the advocates fighting to apply evidence to change national policy, ensuring every midwife gets what she needs to provide high quality, comprehensive delivery care. At the World Health Organization African Region Committee meeting in Zambia, Jhpiego joined leaders from Ghana, Tanzania, WHO-AFRO, and partners for a crucial breast cancer-focused side event highlighting the BEAT Breast Cancer project. As Dr. Somesh Kumar, Jhpiego’s Senior Director on Innovations, noted: “This gathering marks a pivotal moment to accelerate action for breast cancer prevention in Africa. We deeply value the leadership of the Ministries of Health of Ghana and Tanzania, and the steadfast support of the Pfizer Foundation in helping us achieve this milestone.” Through BEAT Breast Cancer, we’re advancing WHO’s 60-60-80 targets: ✔ 60% of invasive breast cancers diagnosed and treated early ✔ Diagnosis within 60 days of presentation ✔ 80% of women completing treatment This is a key moment to prioritize women’s cancers in health systems and ensure more women survive and thrive.
