In today’s unpredictable economy, managing money is as much about mindset as it is about numbers. Emotions, habits, and beliefs all shape the way we spend and save. Join Aiman Syaqirin Sharudin, Senior Associate of KWAP’s Corporate Treasury Department, as he shares his insights on "How Your Mindset Shapes Your Wallet" for this Rise & Thrive edition. 1. How does emotion influence your financial decisions? I see emotions kind of like “market sentiment” in personal finance, they can push your decisions up or down, and not always in a logical way. Sometimes excitement makes you buy something on impulse, sometime fear can cause you to delay investments. For me, the trick is to treat big financial decisions like long-term investments, block out the noise and focus on the fundamentals. 2. Do you consider yourself a spender or a saver — and why? In the real world, there’s always a need to strike a balance between spending and saving. Knowing how to spend wisely while setting aside enough for savings is crucial. Personally, setting clear goals has helped me stay disciplined, allowing me to diversify my spending towards things I consider truly value-adding, while still maintaining adequate savings for the future. I make this easier by assigning a fixed percentage of my income to savings and investment every month. 3. How can people shift from scarcity to abundance mindset? In an organizational context, financial management isn’t just about checking the current cash balance, it also involves evaluating its potential to generate future value. The same principle applies to personal finance. An abundance mindset develops when you see money not only as something to protect, but also as a tool to create opportunities. Consider allocating part of your income toward initiatives that drive long-term growth, whether in financial assets or experiences that build skills. 4. What money beliefs have you had to unlearn? Following from the idea of shifting from a scarcity to an abundance mindset, one belief I had to unlearn is the notion that you must have a large sum before you can start saving or investing. In reality, starting small and being consistent often beats waiting for a one-time windfall. Over time, disciplined contributions even amounts as modest as RM50 can build a meaningful safety net and open the door to long term financial growth. 5. Self-reward culture especially in the newer generation is now commonly practiced as part of a temporary mental relief. What's your view on this habit? I believe everyone needs motivation and small joys. But just like your daily food intake, balance and moderation are key. Occasional rewards can be healthy, but if short terms gratification consistently takes priority over long term goals, you risk undermining your future financial security. The best rewards are the ones you can enjoy today without stealing from tomorrow. #KWAP #KWAPMalaysia #YourRetirementCompanion #MalaysiaMADANI #MADANIBekerja

From slay to W, Gen Z language reflects a generation that’s bold, expressive, and unapologetically creative, and it’s a glimpse into how today’s youth are shaping the future. But beyond the slang lies something deeper: a generation ready to lead with purpose, influence culture, and bring fresh perspectives to the table. What’s your favourite Gen Z word? And do you know what it really means? #KWAP #KWAPMalaysia #YourRetirementCompanion #MalaysiaMADANI #MADANIBekerja
