🚀 A historic milestone for women in space science! WIA-Europe warmly congratulates Professor Michele Dougherty on her appointment as the UK Astronomer Royal — the first woman to hold this prestigious title in its 350-year history. 👏🌟 Professor Dougherty has been a leading figure in space exploration, serving as Principal Investigator for the magnetometer on ESA’s JUICE mission and previously for NASA’s Cassini mission. Her groundbreaking discovery of geysers on Saturn’s moon Enceladus reshaped our understanding of the potential for life beyond Earth. Her achievements are a powerful reminder of the impact of women in aerospace and a true inspiration for future generations. #WIAEurope #WomenInSTEM #SpaceScience #JUICE #Cassini #AstronomerRoyal #Leadership #Inspiration
👏 Congratulations to Professor Michele Dougherty, upon her appointment as the UK’s Astronomer Royal – the first woman to hold the position in its 350-year history!🌟 Professor Michele Dougherty played a major part in initiating the European Space Agency’s Jupiter icy moons explorer mission. She is the Principal Investigator for its magnetometer and was awarded a Royal Society Research Professorship in 2014 enabling her to focus on her research throughout this important space mission.🛰️ Head of Imperial’s Physics Department and Royal Society Research Professor, she was also the principal investigator for the Cassini spacecraft magnetic field measurements throughout Cassini spacecraft operations around Saturn and its neighbourhood. 💡Amongst a series of remarkable results, she was, in particular, responsible for the discovery of geysers from an ocean below the surface of the Saturn moon Enceladus due to their electromagnetic signature.🌊 The discovery changed our entire perspective on the Saturn system and even where life might evolve in the solar system. She received the Royal Society’s Hughes Medal in 2008.🏅 Credits: Max Alexander/UK Space Agency ESA Space Science UK Space Agency Imperial College London
