More than half of the world’s land is under environmental strain that could make it harder for nature to keep supporting human life. 🌍 🌱 A new study published in One Earth have for the first time mapped how far different regions have moved beyond “functional biosphere integrity” – the ability of plants to keep the planet’s life-support systems running. 🌱 “There is an enormous need for civilisation to utilise the biosphere – for food, raw materials and, in future, also for climate protection. It is therefore becoming even more important to quantify the strain we’re already putting on the biosphere – in a regionally differentiated manner and over time – to identify overloads. Our research is paving the way for this,” says Fabian Stenzel, the study’s lead author and quest researcher at Stockholm Resilience Centre. 🌱 Centre researcher and co-author Johan Rockström, calls the study “a breakthrough from a scientific perspective, offering a better overall understanding of planetary boundaries” and says it could influence climate policy. EU imported beef and soy from Brazil rely on critically scarce fresh water supplies. 🐄 🫛 🛑 A new study finds that more than 50 percent of the freshwater required for soy and beef exports to the EU rely on river basins in Brazil with high or critical water scarcity. This means that a significant portion of the trade in these commodities is exposed to physical risks due to reduced water availability. “This research highlights a major, but often overlooked vulnerability in international trade, and calls for the urgent need to assess and manage water use in global supply chains, says Centre researcher Lan Wang-Erlandsson Wang Erlandsson, one of the authors of the study published in Nature. Come to Medborgarplatsen this week to try the super delicious food in the foodtruck developed by PLATE and Swedish rock band Bob Hund. 😋 And at the same time learn more about resilient food systems. 🥦 🥙 🥘 Read about the projet: https://lnkd.in/deEB2ZwE
#ResilientMåltid #Hållbarhet #Forskning #Omställning #BobHundveckan Per Olsson Line Gordon Elin Röös Rebecka Milestad Shon Ferguson Therese Lindahl Noah Linder Bob Hund-veckan i Stockholms stad - https://lnkd.in/d7dVj8zU

Science diplomacy - the way to go to protect our oceans? Check this out with our researcher Robert Blasiak on Thursday at Stockholms universitets Östersjöcentrum/Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre Baltic breakfast.
New Baltic Breakfast coming up next week! This time, we are broadening our perspective on environmental issues and relating them to the current security situation. What does the research say about the impact of geopolitical changes on the state of the environment and environmental measures? What can be learnt from past management of environmental issues in times of crisis? What role can science diplomacy play in balancing environmental protection, offshore infrastructure, and national security? Welcome to a seminar addressing these issues, with Robert Blasiak, Stockholm Resilience Centre -Stockholms universitet, and Karina Barquet, SEI – Stockholm Environment Institute! The moderator is Gun Rudquist, Stockholms universitets Östersjöcentrum/Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre.

A new study reveals a striking pattern: certain shocks, especially those linked to climate, technology, and conflict, are far more likely to strike together. When these shocks collide, they can also amplify one another. “Recognizing these dangerous combinations is more than an academic insight, it’s a call to action. By anticipating where and how such shocks may overlap, societies can shift from reactive to proactive crisis response. This research marks a crucial first step in that direction,” says Louis Delannoy, lead author of the study and postdoctoral researcher at the Centre. The recent global talks in Geneva aimed at reaching a plastic pollution treaty have collapsed once more, with no deal agreed and no clear path forward. “Even though the outcome is disappointing, it is much better to not have a treaty, than having the treaty the way it was being proposed. It was extremely weak, mostly based on voluntary measures. No plastics production, or chemicals considerations were captured in the text,” says Patricia Villarrubia-Gómez, PhD candidate at Stockholm Resilience Centre and member of the Scientists' Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty. “We need both humour and seriousness to break through” 📣💥 This year’s edition of "Greentopia", held at the Way Out West music festival, focused on how food, music and events can help us to stay within planetary boundaries. Co-hosted by Göteborg & Co, LiveGreen and Stockholm Resilience Centre, the climate summit Greentopia brought together scientists, business leaders, artists, and changemakers to discuss how we can accelerate the transition to a food system that operates within the planet’s limits. “We need to set new norms – make sustainable food the default choice. Collaborate – forge new partnerships for greater impact. And we need to raise the voice of food systems – put food at the centre of climate conversations,” said Centre Director Line Gordon. In a time of paradigm shifts, our language must inspire and connect. Humour also plays a role. Talking with rethorics researcher Maria Wolrath, Martin Kann, creative director of indie rock band Bob Hund, said: “Transformation doesn’t work well if we take ourselves too seriously. We need both humour and seriousness to break through – enough concern to act, but not so much fear that people shut down.” One fresh example of that is the food truck he and band members of Bob Hund launched during the festival. It was co-developed with LiveGreen, Axfoundation, PLATE and inspired by research done at Stockholm Resilience Centre. This year’s Swedish climate summit Greentopia has started! It is part of the music festival Way Out West, and this year we focus on how artists, music festivals, and live events can take action for a food system within the planetary boundaries. Now on stage, is Centre Director Line Gordon and Gunhild Anker Stordalen, MD/PhD, talking about what food we should eat that is good both for human and planetary health. Deputy Science Director, Per Olsson, known for his work on sustainability transformations, is one of the initiators of Greentopia, which is now happening for the fourth time. Actually, Greentopia started already earlier this morning on the train from Stockholm to Gothenburg, with a mobile climate meeting moderated by our comms director Marcus Lundstedt and with contributions from Fredrik Moberg.
