📢 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭! 𝐆𝐂𝐌𝐃 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐝. We are proud to release a report on the world’s first field validation of tracer technologies in marine biofuel supply chains. 🎯𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬? Liquid biofuels are a viable near-term decarbonisation solution for maritime. However, current certification schemes, such as ISCC and RSB, lack physical, field-level verification, leaving supply chains still vulnerable to adulteration and emissions reductions being double-counted. 🚢𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 GCMD trialled three tracer candidates — synthetic DNA (Tracer A), element-based metalloid (Tracer B), and non-fluorescent organic (Tracer C) — across six supply chain trials in Singapore, Rotterdam, and other major bunkering hubs. Tracers were deployed at the earliest feasible upstream points and tracked through to storage and use onboard receiving vessels. 🔍 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 In five of six trials, the tracers were homogeneously distributed across neat biofuels constituents and final blends, confirming their chemical compatibility. 🔹 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐀: Detected at most sampling points, but detection downstream was inconsistent, particularly on receiving vessels 🔹 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐁: Successfully detected at all sampling points and showed the highest tolerance to harsh operating conditions. However, discrepancies of 30-40% between expected and detected concentrations make it unreliable for quantification. 🔹 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐂: Consistently detected with <5% variance, it demonstrated cost competitiveness and scalability, and testing ease with commonly used GC-MS. 🌟 𝐎𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧s. 🇸🇬🎉 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝟔𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐞! 🎉🇸🇬 In the spirit of SG60, we celebrated the occasion with a quick tea break featuring nostalgic old-school snacks, a fond throwback for many of us. It's also a bittersweet day as we bid farewell to Dr Sanjay C Kuttan, our Chief Strategy Officer, on his last official working day with GCMD. But it’s not goodbye as Sanjay will continue to support us as our senior advisor. While GCMD’s work spans the globe 🌏, Singapore holds a special place in our story: 🔹 Strategically located in the world’s largest bunkering hub and busiest transshipment port, Singapore enables us to collaborate closely with ecosystem stakeholders. 🔹 Some of our flagship initiatives are contextualised to Singapore: ⚠️ Our ammonia bunkering pilot safety study, designed with Singapore’s stringent port safety requirements in mind, aimed to produce draft guidelines that can be applied elsewhere. This study formed the foundation for safety protocols and vessel compatibility assessments for our landmark ammonia transfers in the Pilbara. ♻️ Recognising the role of biofuels as a near-term decarbonisation solution — especially with growing uptake in Singapore and Rotterdam — we launched an initiative to provide quality, quantity, and emissions abatement assurances for biofuels bunkered at these ports and beyond. We have already published two reports guiding the industry on biofuels degradation and fraud detection. More reports are on the way, sharing our findings on tracer use for biofuel authentication and the impact of long-term continuous use of B24 on vessel operations. In Menon Economics and DNV’s “2024 Leading Maritime Cities of the World”, Singapore was ranked #1, with GCMD cited for initiating “several world-leading projects including ammonia bunkering safety study, supply chain integrity for biofuels, and LCO₂ offloading.” We’re proud to contribute to Singapore’s maritime leadership — and committed to pushing Majulah spirit forward in the years ahead! 💪 #SG60 #NationalDay #MajulahSingapore

However, decarbonising this segment poses unique challenges. Dry bulk vessels often operate on unpredictable ‘tramp’ trades, making it difficult to plan bunkering at ports offering zero- or near-zero-emission (ZNZ) fuels—especially as global infrastructure is still developing, with ZNZ fuels unlikely to be available at all ports in the foreseeable future. While the industry works to scale ZNZ fuel availability and ready ports for their handling and bunkering, there is an urgent need for nearer-term solutions, such as drop-in biofuels, onboard carbon capture systems and energy efficiency technologies (EETs) to meet IMO’s decarbonisation targets. ⏳ This partnership brings together GCMD’s technical expertise and pilot execution capabilities with INTERCARGO’s member reach and consultative status at IMO to help close critical adoption and operational gaps. 🔧 𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐦 𝐭𝐨: 🔷 Accelerate the uptake of EETs among dry bulk shipowners 🔷 Facilitate mutual knowledge-sharing on advancements in low- and zero-carbon-fuelled dry bulk vessels 🔷 Advance deployment of solutions, such as drop-in biofuels and onboard carbon capture 📣 Please scroll through the images to read what Professor Lynn Loo, CEO of GCMD, and Mr Dimitris Monioudis, Technical Committee Chairman of INTERCARGO, have to say about our partnership! 🔗 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞: https://lnkd.in/gvwAXqYT We look forward to working with INTERCARGO! #GCMDpartners #INTERCARGO #Drybulk
