✈️Gelephu International Airport, designed by BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group in collaboration with NACO, is set to become Bhutan’s new international gateway, reflecting the country’s rich craft traditions and natural landscape. Expected to open in 2029, the airport features a diagrid structure crafted from locally and sustainably sourced timber, adorned with painted wood carvings inspired by the ‘Kachen,’ a traditional Bhutanese architectural pillar. The terminal’s modular mass timber frames allow for future expansion while forming a silhouette reminiscent of Bhutan’s mountain ranges. A forest courtyard weaves through the airport, integrating tropical trees that provide natural shade and enhance the travel experience. The airport’s design reflects Bhutan’s commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability, with intricate timber elements decorated with three types of dragons representing the nation’s past, present, and future. 📌XiaoFeng Art Museum | Hangzhou, China by ZAO/standardarchitecture Located at the foot of Daci Mountain near Hangzhou’s West Lake, the XiaoFeng Art Museum is a spatially intricate homage to painter Xiao Feng. The museum is organized around a central courtyard, drawing from the typology of traditional Chinese scholar gardens while employing a contemporary architectural language. Its form, defined by a polygonal, serpentine concrete shell, meanders organically through the site, creating a sequence of expanding and contracting spaces that choreograph a nuanced spatial journey. Cast in-situ with black ink-pigmented concrete, the structure engages in a tactile dialogue with the surrounding landscape.
