  • Congratulations Mary!

I am delighted to share that this summer I graduated from the University of Bath with a First-Class Honours Master of Pharmacology degree and am honoured to have also received the RenaSci Prize for Best Overall (Year 2) in Pharmacology. I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to study and live in such a beautiful city, and for the invaluable experience I gained during my placement year at Concept Life Sciences in Edinburgh under the guidance of Darryl Turner. A sincere thank you to all the academic staff at Bath and my colleagues at CLS for their support and encouragement, all of whom made a real difference to my studies. One of my final-year highlights was writing my literature-based research project exploring the role of cancer-associated fibroblast-derived semaphorin 3E in promoting perineural invasion in pancreatic cancer. I thoroughly enjoyed delving into the science and am especially thankful to Ed Carter for his mentorship throughout the project. Finally, a big thank you to my friends and family for being with me throughout the four years; you’ve given me memories that will last a lifetime. Here’s to the next chapter, I’m excited to see where it takes me!

  • With CADD being more critical than ever in driving innovation in drug discovery, our spotlight today is on Enrico Margiotta, Associate Director of Computational Chemistry. Enrico brings exceptional experience across both academic and CRO environments, and leads our cutting-edge team focused on projects requiring stand-alone or fully integrated drug discovery support. He holds a Ph.D. in Computational and Theoretical Chemistry through a joint program between the University of Padova and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, under the mentorship of world-renowned experts in CADD and quantum chemistry. His postdoctoral work at the University of Cagliari contributed to an NIH-backed global effort targeting antibiotic resistance. Enrico also served as a Research Scientist at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard—ranked the 3rd top scientific research institute in the world—where he led computational chemistry efforts across multiple integrated drug discovery projects in collaboration with leading institutions such as Harvard Medical School, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Novo Nordisk. He has a particular passion for ligand-protein interactions, structure-based drug design, and molecular dynamics simulations. Enrico’s in-depth expertise not only in computational chemistry, but also in medicinal chemistry and biology, makes him an invaluable asset for clients at every stage of their scientific programs. • We looked at the impact of refrigeration and freezing on mRNA-LNP formulations by assessing:    ❄️ The size distribution of mRNA-LNPs using single-angle dynamic light scattering (DLS)  ❄️ The encapsulation efficiency of mRNA-LNPs using the RiboGreen® assay   ❄️ The transfection efficiency by adding samples to HEK-293 cells and measuring GFP expression over 5 days     We found that for this formulation, refrigeration was the best method of storage for mRNA-LNPs as it resulted in the least distributed particle size, and the best encapsulation and transduction efficiencies.     Learn more about our biophysical, molecular, and cell-based services for cell and gene therapies: https://lnkd.in/ezewECBS      #cellandgenetherapy #CGTs #autologouscelltherapy #allogeneiccelltherapy #geneediting #genedelivery #CRO #UKCRO #CLS #Conceptlifesciences

  • This is an exciting time to work for Concept Life Sciences because July is the month where we welcome our new, fresh-out-of-the-box industrial placement students who come into our business and provide an outlet for us to innovate, develop new service lines and contribute to the wider drug discovery ecosystem. Over the last three years we have onboarded students in both chemistry (https://lnkd.in/eZ3wQ4rz) and biology – which has provided us with a platform to develop our expertise in 3D cell culture. Unfortunately, this is also the time of year when we say goodbye to our current crop of industrial placement students. This week we’ve had to bid farewell to Rosalba Craven, a third year biochemistry undergraduate from University of Bath. Rosie has developed a 3D co-culture model for MASH (metabolic associated steatohepatitis) using a fully synthetic peptide-based hydrogel. Her model enables testing of anti-MASH compounds by assessing key fibrotic markers such as collagen deposition, inflammation and lipid accumulation. Over the course of the year, Rosie has learned about the vital role of 3D co-culture models in drug development and the importance of continuous innovation in research. Along the way, she honed core lab skills like cell culture, assay optimisation & data analysis, while growing confident in designing and communicating scientific work. Reflecting on Rosie’s year-long journey with us, our Associate Director of Immunology, Dr Justyna Rzepecka had this to say: "The whole team at Concept Life Sciences enjoyed working with Rosie, who quickly became an integral part of the group. We’re incredibly proud of her undeniable growth as a scientist. I’ve been especially impressed by her ability to present complex data with clarity and confidence. We wish Rosie all the best in her next chapter and hope we played a meaningful role in her development. There’s no doubt she has a bright future ahead!" Thank you for all of your efforts Rosalba Craven, and good luck for the future!
