Earlier this month, our colleague Abbas Abdul, PhD. from Transformative Innovation Africa Hub had the privilege of moderating a Policy & Industry Dialogue under the Industrial Policy Lab (IPL Africa) on Effective Policy Implementation: Operationalising Industrial & Innovation Policies. Our speakers - Nadia Al-Banna, PhD, MBA, Director of Venture Operations & Development, (Cyphercrescent), ALFRED DAWSON QUANSAH, Deputy Manager of Research & Data, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and Silas Omomehin Ajimijaye, General Manager, Monitoring and Evaluation (NCDMB) - shared powerful takeaways: ✨ Africa’s innovators are increasingly returning home to solve local challenges ✨ Mentorship, capacity building, and talent development are turning ideas into investor-ready businesses ✨ Stronger industry–academia partnerships are helping transform research into solutions ✨ Aligning company goals with national priorities builds clearer stakeholder value ✨ Despite bureaucracy and funding gaps, public–private partnerships are sharing risks and unlocking opportunities. The message was clear: collaboration, capacity, and courage are central to making innovation deliver for Africa’s industrial transformation. #TransformativeInnovation #Africa #Nigeria #TIAH #STI #InnovationPolicy #SustainableDevelopment #PolicyDialogue #IndustrialPolicy

New Publication: Policy Entrepreneurship in Collaborative Governance: Transformative Innovation in Catalonia’s Sustainability Transition 🌍The paper explores how policy entrepreneurship, the practices and behaviours of individuals who drive change, shapes Collaborative Public Sector Innovation (CPSI) within the framework of Transformative Innovation Policy (TIP). Highlights from the article: -Focus on the Shared Agendas for sustainability and social initiative in Catalonia, which aims to address challenges like climate change, pollution, and inequality, aligning with the EU's RIS3CAT 2030 strategy. -Shifting from a system-wide view to micro-level collaboration, focusing on how cross-sectoral public actors (from universities, research centres and regional governments) work together on policy design. -Spotlight on policy entrepreneur collaboration: individuals who influence policy by building long-term relationships through workshops and informal engagements. Co-authored by Míriam Acebillo-Baqué, Diana Velasco, Alejandra (Sandra) Boni, the article outlines valuable strategies of policy entrepreneurs, including reframing policy challenges with a systemic perspective, co-constructing shared visions, enabling experimental implementation, and integrating learning mechanisms into the policy cycle. 💡 The findings highlight the important role that individuals and small groups can play in collaborative governance. 👉 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/gtw8wQ4S #PolicyEntrepreneurship #CPSI #TIP #Innovation #Sustainability #PublicPolicy #Catalonia #Collaboration

Accompanied by Prof. Chux Daniels, I had the pleasure of meeting Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Principal Secretary for Science, Research, and Innovation. Our discussion underscored the critical role that science, technology, and innovation (STI) must play in shaping an inclusive and sustainable industrial future for Kenya. We explored the need for a systems approach—one that meaningfully integrates innovation and industrial policies—to unlock Kenya’s full development potential. This conversation took place ahead of the Kenya Industrial Policy Lab implementation workshop, co-hosted by UNIDO and the National Commission for Science & Innovation. The Policy Lab marks an exciting step forward: it aims to catalyze an evidence-based, innovation-led industrial transformation rooted in local priorities and aligned with global imperatives. Shared Agendas for Systemic Transformation! I. Systemic Transformation Systemic transformation is essential to address complex challenges—such as climate change, inequality, and technological disruption—by moving beyond isolated solutions toward integrated, collaborative, and sustainable development II. Shared Agendas Shared Agendas are collaborative, evolving processes built around a common challenge. They drive transformative action through shared vision, co-responsibility, and continuous learning to influence dominant systems III. Transforming Relationships Facilitation is a strategic function grounded in the belief that transforming systems requires transforming relationships. It fosters trust, collaboration, and innovation by creating safe spaces where diverse actors co-create alternatives for sustainable change IV. Facilitation Model Facilitation supports five key phases: 1. Building a shared, inspiring future vision 2. Analysing the current system and identifying barriers and opportunities 3. Developing an adaptive theory of change 4. Defining collaborative actions with transformative potential 5. Designing governance that ensures legitimacy and continuit V. Key Takeaways 1. Facilitation enables radical collaboration, manages complexity and tensions, and supports learning 2. Shared Agendas are not fixed plans but dynamic processes that build new relationships, narratives, and collective action 3. Effective collaboration balances hierarchy and horizontality, uses systems thinking tools, and treats monitoring as a learning process Make sure to check out this insightful report in this post by Tatiana Fernandez (🙏 Giulio Quaggiotto for the hint!) here: https://lnkd.in/dktnsbsg —— For regular updates on Transformative Innovation, make sure to follow us here: The Futuring Alliance The Futuring Alliance unites visionaries across business, policy, science, and society who believe the best way to predict the future is to shape it – together #innovation #transformativeinnovation #systems #systemsthinking #strategy #transformation #facilitation #RIS3CAT

"It is not about steering the process towards a predefined outcome, but about supporting the collective construction of a shared future vision and a contextualised theory of change that is flexible, living, and open to learning." This is just one of the insights from this Generalitat de Catalunya guide on ‘Facilitating the Building of Shared Agendas’. The guide contains lots of insights applicable across multiple contexts.
Systemic change only happens when we make space for it — and commit to building it. This guide explains how to tackle complex, systemic challenges through collaborative, place-based processes supported by skilled facilitation. It describes 5 key steps facilitators help enable and sustain: 1️⃣ Craft a shared and inspiring future vision that mobilises action 2️⃣ Analyse the current system together to identify barriers and opportunities 3️⃣ Develop an adaptive theory of change focused on learning and transformation 4️⃣ Define collaborative actions with transformative potential 5️⃣ Design governance models to ensure legitimacy, coherence, and continuity over time This approach is rooted in the years of experience of the RIS3CAT team of the Catalan Government — working alongside territories, communities, and institutions to build transformative Shared Agendas. Because Shared Agendas don’t just happen. They’re built. Together. 🎥 Now online: Recording of the 23rd episode of our Innovation Circle series! In today’s rapidly changing world, cities and regions are not just adapting to global challenges; they’re leading the way in transformative innovation. From climate resilience to social inclusion, local actors are uniquely positioned to reimagine how we live, work, and grow — but only if innovation is rooted in local realities and supported by long-term, systemic approaches. In this episode, we explored what it means to localise innovation in practice and how to align global goals like the UN #SDGs with community-driven strategies for real, lasting change. 💡 Featured initiatives include: 🔹 The European Hub of the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC), advancing regional experimentation for system change 🔹 The Green Demo Project by Fraunhofer ISI, focused on fostering adaptive, democratic public administrations 🔹 The City of Mannheim, implementing a long-term, SDG-aligned strategy through participatory governance and evidence-based planning These case studies offer concrete insights into how systemic, place-based innovation can help build more resilient, inclusive, and democratic futures.
