Last week, Sweden's Vattenfall chose SMRs for its development of #NewNuclear, through shortlisting GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy BWRX-300 and Rolls-Royce SMR. The move highlights growing recognition of the role of #SMRs for supporting #EnergySecurity and #NetZero goals. This week Urenco colleagues had the pleasure of visiting a dedicated STEM education site for children that we support, The House of the Little Scientists, near our enrichment site Urenco Deutschland GmbH in Gronau, Germany. It's run by our social impact partner the Regional Development Agency (Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft des Kreis Borken) and it was great to see and take part in this valuable community hub, which encourages children's natural curiosity around science and related subjects. #STEM #sustainability

This week, Google and Kairos Power announced an exciting collaboration with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to accelerate the deployment of next-generation #nucleartechnologies. Under the agreement, TVA will become the first US utility company to purchase power directly from an #SMR, which will be used to support the demand from Google’s data centres in the region. This deal signals confidence in the potential of next-gen #nuclear to #decarbonise the grid and to support future demand for #cleanenergy to support the development of AI. As a company which has a Memorandum of Understanding on #AdvancedFuels with Kairos Power, we welcome the news of this partnership. We’ve published our first net zero progress report, showing where we are on our journey to a #NetZero world! 🙂 This follows the publication of our flagship Net Zero Transition Plan in 2023, where we set out where our carbon emissions were in our business and how we were planning to take action to reduce them to zero by 2030 for scopes 1 and 2, and by 2040 overall. Highlights from the report include a new design standard at our plants being introduced – for which any new build has to adhere to – to reduce scope 1 emission sources such as natural gas and refrigerants. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced this week the publication of the Nuclear Taskforce's interim report. The report highlights the need for "radical, once-in-a-generation reform" of the nuclear industry to unlock quick, yet affordable and safe development.
