Filip Nemeth’s consulting career journey really began as a 17-year-old exchange student studying in Lubbock, Texas. It was the first time he spent significant time outside of his native Slovakia, and he was energized by interacting with different kinds of people and cultures. And he wanted more experiences like it. He next moved to London for university and business school and sought out a consulting career specifically for the travel opportunities. Now a Partner on AlixPartners’ retail team, Filip has built a global practice (he has worked on projects or pitches in the Netherlands, the UK, Taiwan, Korea, China, and Japan in the last 12 months alone), which he credits to the openness of our culture and our people. “It’s driven by how we are set up and how we talk about ourselves, but it’s also about the people,” Filip explained. “Everybody is willing to help. I can’t think of a time when I reached out to someone in a different region or practice and they were too busy to meet with me.” Click to read more about Filip’s career and how his passion for travel has made him a better consultant and a better leader: https://lnkd.in/eeDPECPF #lifeatalixpartners

We were proud to sponsor The Times CEO Summit once again this year, where 150+ CEOs and policymakers gathered to discuss global business issues. Our Co-CEO Rob Hornby kicked off the conversation alongside Richard Fletcher, highlighting how leaders are growing their organizations in a world of constant disruption. The open dialogue and peer-to-peer nature of the event made for rich discussions. Thanks to our great partners at The Times. Watch the highlights below.

Government industrial policy is now directly impacting global commerce and business leaders must understand how it can threaten, strengthen, or expand value creation. In a recent Harvard Business Review piece, David Garfield shared his insights on helping executives navigate this new era. The advice? In short: understand policy impacts broadly, act on both near- and long-term signals, stay agile, and don’t lose strategic focus. From consulting to confections.... Last year, former AlixPartners Analyst Elaine Baluyut moved from London to Vancouver to launch Masarap Desserts—a bakery inspired by her childhood memories at her family’s bakery in Manila. “Our ube cookie was the bite that started it all. I baked an original recipe for the cookies for my family, and my mom was like, ‘You should sell them.’” At AlixPartners, Elaine was part of the Business Analyst Accelerated Consulting Program, which taught her core consulting and business skills that she relies on as a new business-owner. “Being able to look at my numbers with honesty and do cashflow forecasting has been helpful. I am able to take a bird’s-eye view on my business and reflect on what’s working, what’s not, what should I be doing more of.” The firm also provided her with a global network of experts eager to support a former colleague. Elaine connected with a grocery consultant who she didn’t know while at the firm with questions on the retail landscape. “She provided invaluable insights and helped me understand key metrics I should be asking for with my clients. I’m so appreciative that somebody I didn't even know while I was an employee of the firm took the time to share their expertise and support with me," explained Elaine. "This really demonstrates that AlixPartners is committed to seeing its people, past and present, succeed even beyond their tenures at the firm.” Read more about Elaine and Masarap here: https://lnkd.in/eAA-JVQG #alixalumni #lifeatalixpartners

Six cyclists. Six days. Five countries. It may sound like a lot of terrain to cover, and that’s because it is. 1,172 kilometers (728 miles) to be exact. For some people, cycling this distance sounds like an absolute nightmare. But for Chris Duffy it was a dream come true. “It’s an idea that’s been in the back of my mind for a while now. I’ve always thought that it would be a great thing to cycle to an EMEA Business Meeting, but I guess I’ve always found an excuse not to,” said Chris, a Director in our Turnaround and Restructuring (TRS) group. This year, though, was different. He decided it was time to “stop making excuses” and just do it. Lucky for Chris, he found five other adventurous colleagues to join him. Greg Cross, Richard Harrison and Steve Maskell work alongside Chris in TRS. Paul Taylor's in Business Development, while Oliver Tudor's in Risk Advisory. Together, they make “The Cycling Six”. From the beginning the cyclists received the full support of the firm, partnering with the AlixPartners (UK) Charitable Foundation to raise money for two organizations: The Make Way Foundation and Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. On June 25, The Cycling Six departed from the AlixPartners’ London office and cycled through France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, finishing at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin six days later. To date, The Six have raised £81,522—and counting! “The money we’ve raised has the power to make a real difference, not just for individuals in need, but also for their families and support networks. That’s what makes the challenge worthwhile,” said Steve. For a short leg on the first day of the ride, the cyclists were joined by clients, fellow employees, and even Founding Trustee of The Make Way Foundation, Matthew Bryant. “While it wasn’t designed for this, this resonated with clients really well and it was a genuinely good way to engage with them,” Richard mentioned. “They wanted to be a part of it.” The larger group dispersed in Rochester, England after lunch, and from there The Six cycled on. Flanked by Partner and Managing Director Alastair Beveridge, who manned the support car, The Six cycled nearly 12 hours a day across varying terrains and luckily, cooperative weather. But the ride was far from easy. It came with navigational challenges, injuries and sickness, blown tires, broken equipment and of course, sore bodies. Despite the setbacks, they made it through. “I think we were all just very conscious that not everybody is feeling good at the same time,” said Greg. “When we were feeling strong, we were always mindful to check in with the others on the team and slow down as needed.” “How we worked together as a team throughout is how we achieved success,” Paul added. “Without that support it simply wouldn’t have been possible.” Thanks to that support, the cyclists who started this journey as colleagues are now walking out of it as friends—even if they can’t feel their legs.
