BioValue helps transformative change in spatial policymaking to upscale opportunities for valuing biodiversity in EU.
About us
Despite international and European policies in place to halt biodiversity loss, the effect of multilevel, and multisector, direct and indirect drivers of change contribute to continuing negative trends. The BioValue proposal was designed upon the fact that persistent land use and land cover changes have a major effect on biodiversity loss; and on the assumption that a transformative change is needed on paradigms, goals and values shaping current spatial dynamics by a mix of sectoral policies. Such transformative change is in line with the IPBES(2020) report and the EU biodiversity strategy 2030 calling for co-responsible engagement of all relevant actors, in a whole-of society approach to biodiversity. To address this call, we will explore the transformative potential of spatial planning, as the arena for action and the territorial expression of multilevel policies, strategic to invert current trends of biodiversity loss. The objective of BioValue is to safeguard and increase biodiversity by better articulating three instrumental perspectives - spatial planning, environmental assessment, and economic and financing instruments, individually and in combined action. BioValue builds upon knowledge created by several EU projects, including a conceptual framework on transformative change to be adapted for analysing the potential of instruments and their interactions in local case-studies. Funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or REA. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.

As the EU budget priorities shift, the proposed cuts to nature, #biodiversity, and circular economy programmes send a troubling signal. At #BioValueEU, we’ve worked to demonstrate that biodiversity is not an afterthought, but a strategic asset for #spatialplanning and sustainable development. Now more than ever, it’s crucial to protect and scale up the results of projects like BioValue, ensuring that biodiversity remains central in future EU policies. 📰 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dxW4aKxT

🌿 Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Policymaking: A Collective Call for Transformative Change On June 4–5, 2025, more than 150 participants gathered in Brussels and online for a two-day event hosted by 11 projects focused on Transformative Change for Biodiversity—including CLEVER, BIOVALUE project , RainforestHEU , BAMBOO , BioAgora Project , BIONEXT Project , BIOTraCes , BEDROCK, TRANSPATH Project , @PLANET4B Project, and DAISY. Together, they explored how biodiversity can be more effectively integrated into public policymaking, spatial planning, and socio-economic systems. From research insights and interactive workshops to policy dialogues with representatives from the European Commission, the event sparked powerful discussions on how to realign institutions, narratives, and planning frameworks around biodiversity as a core societal value. The event’s key outcomes and lessons will be consolidated in a white paper, offering concrete policy recommendations to support transformative change across Europe and beyond. Did you watch our video about the perspectives on peatland futures in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region? The video features the voices of local stakeholders - from farmers and landowners to conservationists, researchers, and community leaders. Their insights reflect the complexity of landscape transformation and underline the need for co-creation and long-term commitment. This is not a story of quick fixes, but of navigating transformation. You can watch it right now ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eGEAvCrd

🌱 We are live from the policy dialogue session "Mainstreaming biodiversity for transformative change", jointly organised with the #TransformativeChange4Biodiversity. BioValue has just hosted a panel session, a space for open and constructive dialogue between science and policy—an essential step to truly integrate biodiversity into all aspects of decision-making. The session, chaired by Maria Rosário Partidário, #BioValueEU project coordinator, welcomed four panelists from science and policy: 🔹 Humberto Rosa - DG ENV 🔹 Christian Albert - University of Hanover 🔹 Gilles Doignon - DG R&I 🔹 Henrique Pereira - iDIV What emerged form reflections is that #transformativechange for biodiversity must extend beyond the environmental sector, involving all systems that influence #biodiversity outcomes, fostering collaboration, integration, and shared understanding. From emerging technologies and real-time biodiversity monitoring, to co-design with local communities, real change depends on bridging ambition and practical implementation. Panelists noted how restoration should be seen not as a constraint, but as a pathway to inclusion, justice, and hope. 🔵 We thank all speakers for their valuable insights and their commitment to moving biodiversity to the heart of EU policymaking.

🌿What does it take to make spatial planning and biodiversity management more just, inclusive, and transformative? During the #BioValueEU workshop today, chaired by Davide Geneletti and moderated by Lia Laporta, Jorge Baptista e Silva and Ana Morais Sá, participants explored how spatial and sectoral planning policies can better support biodiversity while addressing policy, power dynamics and practices. 🟠 Three working groups worked on tackling questions about: 1) Justice in #biodiversity 2) Barriers and enablers to #transformativechange 3) Missing links in planning systems Using flashcards created within the project, participants tried to understand how to reshape governance, rethink policy levers, and move toward systemic, inclusive solutions. Resulting recommendations regard the need to shift narratives to better reflect on lived realities. This requires stronger coordination across sectors and levels of governance, as well as a recognition that biodiversity and justice cannot be reduced to simple metrics: context-specific definitions are essential for meaningful solutions. 🌱Thanks to all who joined and brought their perspectives to the table! #TransformativeChange4Biodiversity

🌿 The BioValue final event has just kicked off in Brussels! Emanuela De Menna (REA Project Officer) and Maria Rosário Partidário (BioValue project coordinator) opened the session with a focus on the project’s legacy—what remains and continues to inspire beyond the project’s lifetime. Funded by the European Commission, #BioValueEU was among the first wave of research projects aiming for transformative change to protect and restore biodiversity. Over the years, it has stood out for its collaboration with other initiatives and its commitment to impact at both regional and EU levels. As De Menna highlighted, it’s not just about results—it’s about what will last: the ideas, partnerships, and knowledge that will keep informing policy, guiding research, and supporting action for biodiversity. We’re proud of what BioValue has achieved—and even more excited about the legacy it leaves behind. 🌱 📢 You are still on time to join us online: https://lnkd.in/dfCn665y #TransformativeChange4Biodiversity
