The Purple Heart, established by General George Washington in 1782, remains one of our nation’s oldest and deepest symbols of honor and sacrifice. It was revived in its modern form in 1932 and continues to be awarded today. This year, Cobb County is proud to celebrate 40 years of partnership with the UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government EXCEL program—a year-long executive leadership experience that develops competent and informed leaders for the county. Participants refine their management skills through a three-level program dealing with such topics as leadership styles, motivation, communication, goal-setting, conflict, organization and change, ethics and professionalism, and other vital management issues. As part of the program, each cohort completes a team-based community project. The EXCEL Class of 2025 partnered with The Table on Delk, an organization that provides a safe space and support services for individuals currently experiencing or at risk of sexual exploitation. The team helped enhance The Table’s new facility by contributing a new basketball court, roof repairs and other upgrades to create a more welcoming and supportive environment for those they serve.
