Trammell Crow once owned the most CRE in the US.
• Mr. Crow owned 300,000,000 square feet of real estate.
• His company was worth over $2,200,000,000.
When asked about his success, Crow said this:
“You succeed only because others want you to.”
Here’s my 3 takeaways from Trammell Crow.
1) “There’s as much risk in doing nothing as in doing something.”
- I read Crow’s book “Master Builder” because I had the pleasure of working alongside many former employees.
- It gave me great insight into the people I was working with. I wanted to replicate their successes.
- Crow’s company was very entrepreneurial. With partners getting paid based on a project's success.
- As a result, the Crow family was able to build, recapitalize, sell and rebuild their business divisions many times over.
2) “There must always be a burning in your heart to achieve.”
- What enabled their success were having the right people in place while giving them the freedom to execute an approved business plan.
- The right people long to learn. They long to succeed. And they back that up with the right actions.
- You can’t teach that. You either have it, or you don’t.
3) “You succeed only because others want you to.”
- Your track record as an entrepreneur is the most meaningful scorecard of your achievements.
- That track record is dependent on so many people that work with you in that process.
- Tenants. Employees. Investors. Partners. Brokers. Lenders.
- Remember the people that help you on your journey.
